Slade Paddock: Grass pitches

General

  • Well-maintained and gated park in a peaceful rural village
  • A 10-minute drive to Ely, 35 to Newmarket and 40 to Cambridge
  • Pub on site with trampoline; dog-walking track right across the road

Ease yourself into East Anglian explores by sorting a space at Slade Paddock, a well-located and secure gated site in Witcham that's surrounded by scenic walks for ramblers.

This park is a prime spot for pet owners as well as wanderers, with a dog-walking track right across the road for guests bringing their four-legged pals along. History buffs are sorted here too thanks to a bus service that stops just off the local green and whisks you to the stately sights of Cambridge within an hour.

Also in the village is a pub for eats, and barbecues are allowed on the spacious open grounds if you’re keen to rustle up alfresco food. Rather order local grub at a restaurant when evening rolls around? If you fancy dining out, eateries are a 15-minute drive away in Ely, which is also home to top local attractions like Oliver Cromwell’s House.

When you’d prefer to stay on base after dusk, this Cambridgeshire park has a communal TV room for snuggling up in front of the box. Newly added for 2020 are two wetrooms with showers, a washing-up area, and a toilet that's accessible for people with disabilities.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Very welcoming staff, really helpful after I requested a quieter spot. Was put in an area normally reserved for bigger campers, so great stuff.
Very clean toilet block and showers.
Level pitches large too in some areas.
The bar was very well run, smiling staff, quickly served, great prices, plenty of logs given out for the fire pits.
Nice dog walks over the road, there are three connecting fields, a shame some owners seem incapable of cleaning up after themselves.
    Great value too.
ANPR entry and exit worked well

    Disliked:

I'm being picky when I say that the view isn't the greatest, there is a fairly quiet road out the front, or if you look the other way there's an industrial unit.
Where we were, and we parked in frontwards a massive security light was on all night which did penetrate the front window.
Shame someone let their dog mess literally ten metres in front of out pitch and didn't pick up, but that's not the owners fault.

Facilities including toilets, showers and washing up facilities were excellent! Staff were very friendly and helpful. Lots of space for our pitch.

    Disliked:

Site was not very sheltered but will be in a few years when trees have grown to a decent size. There is a noisy main road not far away. Music and talking from the pub, on site, on Sunday night was very loud at almost 10.30 pm so we phoned and requested they quieten down which they did virtually immediately. We have never experienced such loud noise at this time before at any campsite and wonder how long it would have gone on if we hadn't got in touch. This was the eve of the Queen's funeral and I wonder if it was appropriate

From the manager...

We did question allowing this booking on our site as the customer was very disrespectful to a member of staff on the telephone pre arrival. We are sorry our trees haven't grown sufficiently for you, but we are a young site and expect over time nature can remedy this issue. The noise from the pub may have been a little bit louder than normal as being a Bank Holiday (we had not other complaints from on-site) In no way was anyone inappropriate regarding the Queen's funeral. We had a day in the pub Monday from 10:30 watching the funeral in which we provided food and drink to honour Her Majesty.

Super clean toilets and showers, good level grass pitch with water and electric

    Disliked:

Restaurant closed and pub in the town closed, so only Fish and chip shop open which was a 20minute walk(though they were good), and although showers were large and spotless they were not very powerful

From the manager...

We do not have a restaurant on-site and as you stayed 1 night on a Tuesday we do not have any food vans during the week low season only on weekends. We will look into the low pressure on showers as haven't had any other complaints regarding this matter.

Local attractions

Ely (15 minutes’ drive) has endless activities to keep you entertained: head to this town to roam around the cracking cathedral and stained-glass museum before leaping onto a Liberty Belle Cruises boat at Ship Lane to bob along the Great Ouse river.

Fancy a flutter? Newmarket (35 minutes) is known for being the birthplace of horse racing, so it’s a must-visit spot for equestrian types. Peer at the high-tech displays in Palace House’s National Horseracing Museum, timing your visit to the town just right to catch a fixture at the renowned racecourse afterwards.

If you’re hot on history, you’ll want to amble around Anglesey Abbey (35 minutes) and admire the artworks before covering some of the 98 acres of grounds during a stroll. Wander to Wimpole Hall (40 minutes) later on, stopping to fawn over the farm animals that live here, then eye up the aviation displays – an old Concorde plane included – at the Imperial War Museum Duxford (40 minutes).

Many of East Anglia’s other absorbing attractions are in Cambridge (40 minutes): think a series of stunning colleges, fab art galleries like the Fitzwilliam Museum and pleasant punting on the River Cam.
