Andrew's Field

General

  • Family-run site on the banks of the river Avon
  • A mile from Eckington village centre; 15 minutes' drive from Pershore
  • Direct river access for launching canoes or kayaks; free fishing

Sort a break on the banks of the river Avon at Andrew's Field, a small-scale site in a quiet corner of Worcestershire. This family-run spot is about a mile from Eckington village centre and has direct access to the river, so feel free to make the most of its waterside location by bringing along a canoe or kayak. Folk staying the night here are also welcome to cast their line in the clear waters of the Avon free of charge.

Andrew's Field has basic facilities like a water tap and an Elsan point, so this site's best suited for self-sufficient types who are happy to bring their own toilet. You're allowed to light campfires where appropriate – feel free to ask Andrew or a member of his crew if you have any doubts.

The main pitch area is south-facing, so it's pleasantly warm when the sun is out, with a breeze blowing off the river to keep you cool in the hot summer months. The field has views over hills in the distance, but you may wish to keep an eye on the foreground too – wild deer can sometimes be seen walking down to the river to drink, and kingfishers, cuckoos and woodpeckers are all regularly spotted.

Eckington village centre is about 20 minutes away on foot, as are its two rather tempting pubs (Andrew's always happy to point you in the direction of other choice boozers). Pershore is about 15 minutes' drive away, with well-stocked food shops and a covered market.

It would be impossible to find a more secluded and convenient site. When we were there there was only one other motorhome! Perhaps it would be busier in the height of summer. It was quiet, peaceful and although there were no facilities apart from ELSAN and water there is a village a short walk away. There is also a lock on site and a bench where you can sit and watch beginners trying to figure out how to use the lock! Although there was only one barge that came through when we were there that we know about! If you are agoraphobic it's not for you if not, perfect!

    Disliked:

The access to the site is down a very narrow lane and there could be problems at some points if you met an equally big motorhome or campervan as ours coming the other way. Also the padlock on the gate protected by a combination, is a bit temperamental and could be replaced but they are extremely small points.

Everything. This was a last minute random selection and didn't disappoint. The site is a field edging onto the river.
Wake up and watch the river users and wildlife as you eat - though without the gate code I doubt wild deer will be along to drink. A day out on any number of walks around the area and home for tea and more people watching.

The night is dark, very dark, and so blanket out lying by the van watching the stars was a good way to end the day.

High mark for facilities as the river is there and it's up to you if you use it

    Disliked:

Super picky first world problem not really a dislike. Either climbing over the fence/gates or entering the code to open the double gates was a bind. A pedestrian gate for ease would be nice but not essential

Local attractions

The Avon's many locks and weirs mean the flow is gentle enough for paddleboarding, so either bring your own or hire one out at Pershore Riverside Centre (15 minutes' drive). While in Pershore, check out the ancient abbey, or grab a show (or a slice of cake) at Number 8, an independent cinema, arts centre and café.

Wangle yourself a day or two to experience some of the English wine that's made in the fertile local countryside. Prep your palates for some crisp and fruity flavours at Lovells Vineyard (25 minutes), a family-run vineyard at the foot of the Malvern Hills that organises tours and splendid cellar-door sales.

Kids who have patiently sat through wine-making demos without getting a chance to slurp the results can be rewarded with a trip to Newbridge Farm Park (40 minutes), where bumpy tractor rides and cute farm critters make for rip-roaring rural jaunts. There's also All Things Wild (30 minutes), a zoo where you can walk with loveable lemurs and wallabies.
