  • Back-to-basics site on a farm 10 minutes' drive from Kidderminster
  • West Midland Safari Park and Go Ape! within a 20-minute drive
  • A 10-minute walk from two riverside food pubs and miniature golf
Keen for a country escape close to Kidderminster? Castle Gate Campsite could be the place for you – wend your way to its Wolverley location to be 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of town, and well within reach of lots of ways to spend Worcestershire days. This working farm site once had its own castle; it’s long gone now, but you’ll still see traces of the walls around the park, and be greeted by two grand gatehouses. With the fancy focal point no more, life proceeds at a rather more sedate and simple level: this is a rural back to basics place, where frills are limited to just a toilet and sink and where neighbours are mostly cattle and horses. To fill up on fresh air, take a little trot around the park, following the trails and seeking out little sunny spots in the wooded areas. You may also want to consider barbecue based cookouts, or leave all the foodie prep to the pros by toddling off to one of the local pubs – there are two rather fine options down by the river, about a half-hour amble away. (If you opt for the Queens Head, take some time to peruse the pub’s team photos to see if you can spot a famed musician among the ranks.)

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Open space, clean toilets and quiet

Disliked Would have stayed longer if they had facilities for a hot shower- this is within expectation because I knew that it was a very basic campsite

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The location was great, it was of the main drag, woodlands either side and a good size of Greenland to pitch up on. The hosts louie and Holly were fantastic and very friendly. It was the perfect place for me and my grandson ( it was his first time camping at the age of 5). Will definitely go Austin and definitely recommend it. Well done castle gate.

Disliked The only bad point of i had to point anything out is the small driver to the pitch. Maybe a couple of bags of sand to try and level the road as some of the bikes were a little big. But that's it....

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The area is lovely, and is close to my home, very peaceful for the most part of the stay, very spacious and not overbooked.

Great communication with owner prior to booking!

Disliked There was a white fiesta staying the night we were there in a bell tent at the bottom of the site. It would leave the site, then come back, then off again, then back, and this was from 8pm approx till past midnight, I honestly think they were using the site as a drug safe house if im being honest!!

People in that bell tent were noisy, playing music past 9 o clock at the bottom of the site. Dont stay down the bottom end.

Then finally the Nissan Navara (guessing its relatives of the farm owner) came down once at midnight to check everyone's booking was in order, fair enough.

But at 2am, I hear the Nissan Navara gunning down the site with trailer in tow, squeaking away, then the driver turns round right in front of our tent. All I saw was the headlights of the Navara coming towards me at 2am, literally thought they were going to run me over. Need to be a bit more considerate and thoughtful of the guests staying.

From the manager: Unfortunately our cattle escaped that night and we were pressed to find them , so we apologise for the inconvenience. None were near the campsite but we had to be sure . (60 cattle)
As for a drug safe house I’m afraid this is slander and would respect that you refrain from making assumptions and wild accusations because of people’s ethnicity, they were asked to be quite once earlier in the night as people do sometimes unwind and let themselves go.
I have requested pitchup removed this

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked So chilled out, peaceful, lovely views towards end of site. The portaloo was clean and toilet roll re plenished. Owners very helpful. If you walk to the bottom of the field to the left there is a gap in bushes that leads you to a disused road that you can walk along for 15 minutes that takes you to a pub called "The Lock" food was ok. Kinver is a short drive away another lovely pub called "The Vine" lovely food and good outside space with bar and pizza oven. Very basic campsite but we had a great time as a party of 11.

Disliked Our only comment would be the field isn't flat, so you need to be particular where you pitch.

Local attractions

Once you’ve warmed up on the farm, head off to the Wyre Forest National Nature Reserve 20 minutes away, for walks through the woodland, meadows and orchards that make up the 549-hectare reserve. Tread quietly for glimpses of deer, butterflies and kingfishers; you can always save your yelling for a ride on the ziplines at the forest’s Go Ape! adventure park. If farm life’s given the kids (or, ahem, you) a desire to get hands-on with the animals, take flight to Little Owl Farm Park (20 minutes’ drive), where they (or, ahem, you) can pet chicks and bunnies and make pals with the pigs. Best be keeping your hands to yourselves if you then head on to the West Midland Safari Park (15 minutes) – the beasts here are rather bigger and better viewed from a safe distance. Holiday not complete without hitting a few balls about? Depending on your golfing prowess you may like to swing your way round the 18-hole course at Kidderminster Golf Club, or putt your way round the zany obstacles at the miniature golf course in Wolverley. Train buffs will know Kidderminster as a place to join the steam powered Severn Valley Railway; it’s also home to the Museum of Carpet (a bit niche, this one, but with high praise from past visitors).
