  • Back-to-basics site on a farm 10 minutes' drive from Kidderminster
  • West Midland Safari Park and Go Ape! within a 20-minute drive
  • A 10-minute walk from two riverside food pubs and miniature golf
Keen for a country escape close to Kidderminster? Castle Gate Campsite could be the place for you – wend your way to its Wolverley location to be 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of town, and well within reach of lots of ways to spend Worcestershire days. This working farm site once had its own castle; it’s long gone now, but you’ll still see traces of the walls around the park, and be greeted by two grand gatehouses. With the fancy focal point no more, life proceeds at a rather more sedate and simple level: this is a rural back to basics place, where frills are limited to just a toilet and sink and where neighbours are mostly cattle and horses. To fill up on fresh air, take a little trot around the park, following the trails and seeking out little sunny spots in the wooded areas. You may also want to consider barbecue based cookouts, or leave all the foodie prep to the pros by toddling off to one of the local pubs – there are two rather fine options down by the river, about a half-hour amble away. (If you opt for the Queens Head, take some time to peruse the pub’s team photos to see if you can spot a famed musician among the ranks.)

What customers say

A peaceful, rustic camping vibe, often compared to wild camping. Praised for spacious pitches, campfires, clean facilities, and friendly owners. Some note uneven fields. Occasional camper noise and wet-weather access challenges mentioned.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Lots of room to set up and still be in your own area, a beautiful site that's back to basics but perfect for what we were looking for. The Lock pub was just around the corner and was lovely as well as a beautiful woodland.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Beautiful place, looking forward to coming again. There were lots of portaloos spread out across site and kept nice and clean. Huge space was perfect for kids to run around. Great brick fire pit the kids built to enjoy at night. Hosts were brilliant and very helpful.

Disliked Can't get into woods alongside campsite but we found a great walk exploring along canals instead.

From the manager: Hi
Glad you enjoyed your stay
The woods to the one side are not accessible however the woods on the other side offer 15 acres to explore all owned and private by the CGC farm
Sorry this was not explained to you during your stay , the blue bells were out and many paths to explore as well as fire wood to collect if wanted also the woods will lead to canal ,
We will make signs more visible and make sure our guests are properly informed, sorry you were not , if you come again we shall bundle up some fresh wood and eggs for you
Kind regards
CGC

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Our favourite sort of campsite, quiet, simple and relaxed. Huge sloping field with woods either side, pitch wherever you want. Loos and taps are spaced at intervals along the field, you can walk to the canal if you go through the gate on the right of the site and walk through the woods. From there you can walk along the canal all the way to Kidderminster- incredibly picturesque. The Lock pub is worth a stop for food, only a few minutes walk. Sit and watch the narrow boats travelling through the lock itself. We had a wonderful weekend!

Disliked Nothing!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We really enjoyed our stay at Castle Gate Campsite. The atmosphere was very peaceful, and the area was lush and green. The restrooms were conveniently located, clean, and there were enough of them. There was also plenty of water available. Overall, we were very satisfied with our experience.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Great location for a peaceful few days away!
Really quiet location that’s tucked away from main roads and any loud traffic. We spent 2 nights and had no disturbances the entire time!
Toilet facilities really clean and well maintained, along with access to running water which came in handy.
After we arrived someone drove down to us to check us in, after that we didn’t hear anything from anyone, closest I’ve come to wild camping on a site!

100% will be returning! Dog loved it and so did we!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked A lovely lovely campsite, set in a really nice valley. Met the owner last night and she was really lovely and helpful. It’s a basic site with just portacabins and freshwater taps, but it’s all you need! The toilets (portacabins) were spotlessly clean and well maintained. I will most certainly be visiting again.

Disliked Nothing.

Local attractions

Once you’ve warmed up on the farm, head off to the Wyre Forest National Nature Reserve 20 minutes away, for walks through the woodland, meadows and orchards that make up the 549-hectare reserve. Tread quietly for glimpses of deer, butterflies and kingfishers; you can always save your yelling for a ride on the ziplines at the forest’s Go Ape! adventure park. If farm life’s given the kids (or, ahem, you) a desire to get hands-on with the animals, take flight to Little Owl Farm Park (20 minutes’ drive), where they (or, ahem, you) can pet chicks and bunnies and make pals with the pigs. Best be keeping your hands to yourselves if you then head on to the West Midland Safari Park (15 minutes) – the beasts here are rather bigger and better viewed from a safe distance. Holiday not complete without hitting a few balls about? Depending on your golfing prowess you may like to swing your way round the 18-hole course at Kidderminster Golf Club, or putt your way round the zany obstacles at the miniature golf course in Wolverley. Train buffs will know Kidderminster as a place to join the steam powered Severn Valley Railway; it’s also home to the Museum of Carpet (a bit niche, this one, but with high praise from past visitors).
