Ssssh, don’t let the kids get wind of it, but if you stay at Knowle Donkey Sanctuary Certificated Location, a Caravan and Motorhome Club members-only campsite on a farm 10 minutes’ drive from Solihull in the West Midlands, they’ll get to spend lots of time sharing cuddles with the furry residents at the namesake sanctuary. Along with donkey hugs, at this site (new in 2024 and still maturing; basics are in place, including water, Elsan points, recycling and visitor information but no toilets or showers), you also get neatly maintained gravel and grass pitches with countryside views. There’s also a dedicated dog run, so Fido can join you on your adventures, and free-range eggs and honey from the farm’s hives are for sale on site too (that’s breakfast taken care of then). Barbecues are allowed at the pitches, and there are supermarkets in Knowle and Dorridge (both five minutes’ drive) for picking up provisions; Solihull (10 minutes) is the nearest place for major shopping sprees. If you don’t fancy cooking alfresco, there’s a food pub adjacent to the Birmingham Canal about five minutes’ walk away. The site couldn’t be easier to get to, being less than 10 minutes from Junction 5 of the M42, and only 10 miles from Junction 15 of the M40.

  • Facilities/activities including WiFi are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.
  • This site only accepts bookings from existing Caravan and Motorhome Club members: please provide your membership number in the 'Special requests' box when booking.
  • Electricity is metered on site at £0.38 per kWh and must be paid by debit/credit card or PayPal via the website link/QR code provided onsite. This site is under development and the owners will do everything they can to minimise disturbance to guests while improving the facilities. Also, there is some traffic noise from the A4141 at peak times, but it’s quiet at night.

This is a developing site with large, level hard standing pitches and metered hook-ups. Staff were praised as friendly, convenient for the NEC, and the donkeys were a bonus. Road noise and no washrooms were noted, but it was a peaceful, good value stopover with future improvements planned.

Liked Excellent lines of communication - on line booking through club membership, on arrival was clearly directed to our pitch even without the manager being there.
Electricity was easy to access via QR code on the connection box on the pitch.
Water connection also on pitch. All in all excellent value and perfect for a stopover - with the added bonus of Donkeys, Alpacas and sheep to make the site comfortable.

Liked Very spacious fully serviced pitches.
Donkeys and lambs were gorgeous ☺️

Disliked No shower or toilet blocks yet but the price reflected that and was clearly stated. Will be amazing once it’s all done.
Bit of noise from the road but it didn’t bother us.

Liked Owner, staff all very friendly, it was busy with visitors to the Donkey Sanctuary, they are doing wonderful work with this.
As site is work in progress you can visualise the potential. Great access from main routes. Walking distance to canal, local pubs and Knowle.

Disliked Unable to take our dogs over to cafe, or to see the donkeys due to a previous incident with campers dog attacking owners dogs. A minority spoil it for the rest of us responsible dog owners.
Road noise could be issue to some.

Liked Spacious pitches and water on pitch is good.

Disliked Welcome from owner was non existant suggest customer relations course. Very little information given such as gate at end of site, no dogs allowed to end of site - (despite owners dogs off lead and wandering), electric metering very expensive and difficult to regulate.

Liked It’s difficult to give a fair rating as this was our first stay and we arrived after dark (our fault), It’s difficult to give a fair rating as this was our first stay and we arrived after dark (our fault), so we didn’t see the site properly until the morning. There appears to be work underway to improve things, which is encouraging, but due to the recent poor weather, the site was very saturated and currently feels a little run down.

Disliked Road noise and Elson and grey waste facilities.

Liked Lovely friendy site unfortunately because of the weather it was very boggy.

Disliked We found the electric to be very expensive. We were there from Friday evening to Sunday morning and it cost £35.

From the manager: The electric is pay as you go so if you use a lot you pay a lot so perhaps you could consider the environment and use a little less

Liked Nice large stoned pitch, water and elsan disposal available. Although it backs onto main road, this was quiet overnight and site is located in a rural area with a pub a few yards down the road for food. We had a good undisturbed overnight stay. Site is convenient for the NEC only 15 mins away if you are attending an exhibition.

After you’ve all stopped fussing the donkeys, local bucket-list attractions include the spectacular and family-friendly Warwick Castle (20 minutes’ drive), with jousting sessions, raptor flying displays and live shows re-enacting major events in British history. Other attractions with a heritage slant include the National Trust properties of Baddesley Clinton, where you can tour Elizabethan interiors, or Packwood House (both 10 minutes), a Tudor mansion with an exquisite topiary garden. And of course, Shakespeare’s birthplace of Stratford-upon-Avon is only half an hour away by car for performances at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and visits to the bard’s birthplace. The National Exhibition Centre (15 minutes) is host to year-round fairs and festivals, while petrolheads can spend time admiring the British bikes on display at the National Motorcycle Museum (10 minutes). And after all that culture, if your kids are asking for more time with furry creatures, Hatton Country World (also 10 minutes) has a petting farm as well as dinosaur trails and soft-play for toddlers.
