  • Luxurious, modern pods in a Georgian walled garden
  • A five-minute drive from Rocester or Denstone; Ashbourne 15 minutes
  • Indoor kitchen plus a shared outdoor barbecue and pizza oven
There's something particularly pleasing about being in an outdoor space that's hugged by old brick walls. Most plants would probably agree, as such sun-trapping set-ups tend to create a microclimate that's just right for summer fruit and flowers. The Walled Garden Pods, a small and secluded site in the Staffordshire countryside, is also fertile ground for alfresco holidays. The modern accommodation here sleeps up to five and is artfully spread over a spacious site dating back to the Georgian period. The whole place has been thoroughly and lovingly done up by the family behind the place, using reclaimed and recycled materials as much as possible. The self-contained units here come with a bathroom including a shower, toilet and basin. Bedding is included, but this ain't just any old set of sheets – at The Walled Garden Pods, you can expect to rest your dainty head on smooth Egyptian cotton. While each pod has its own niftily compact kitchenette, there's also a shared outdoor cooking area and seating space with a barbecue and pizza oven. The site is located between the villages of Rocester and Denstone, both of which are about five minutes away by car: the former has a nifty corner shop and a couple of takeaways, while the latter is home to a well-liked pub.

Great location

Disliked: We were told there was a shop on site where we could buy firelighters & wood for the pizza oven. Unfortunately they'd run out but when I called the owners they told us where we could purchase just down the road so easily sorted

Camping pod (no pets)

Liked: Lovely clean room with all the essentials kitchen items you would need. Nice little shower room, which again was clean with fresh towels. The beds were comfortable. The outside area was a very nice touch, with undercover seating area with pizza oven. We came as a party of 10 and really enjoyed our night here. I would definitely recommend.

Camping pod (pet friendly)

Liked: An absolutely lovely place to stay at, great if you have dogs as they can run around the grounds without worrying about them getting out. Pods were very cosy and the communal seating area is great for when you have a bigger group.
It has lots of places to visit around the area like Alton Towers and national trust sites so it’s great for people of all ages.
Would highly recommend these pods!

Local attractions

As with most of the area around the Staffordshire–Derbyshire border, it's not far to some splendid rural walking spots. The Churnet Valley Walking Route (five minutes' drive) is a flat path that follows the pretty Caldon Canal; hillier hikes are also to be had, as it's but 20 minutes from your pod to the southern edge of the Peak District National Park. The site is also a convenient base for those heading to Alton Towers (10 minutes), a fably thrilling theme park that needs no introduction. If you really want to push the boat out and indulge the kids, it's also close enough to Gulliver's Kingdom (35 minutes) to tick off both parks during your stay. If rides and slides don't push the right buttons, it's also a doddle to get out for more restful pursuits. For a golfing challenge, try the tricky 18 holes at JCB Golf and Country Club (five minutes); if you're yet to take your first steps in the sport, perhaps Lightwood Golf driving range (25 minutes) will be a better fit. Another genteel past-time is browsing for antiques in nearby Ashbourne (15 minutes), where there are around 10 different shops to rummage through.
