  • Park in the grounds of a country inn close to walking footpaths
  • A 20-minute drive from Alton Towers and 25 from the Peak District
  • Meals served at the pub; play area and farm animals in grounds
Charlie Bassetts, a family-friendly site in the grounds of a fab pub (closed on Mondays) serving up homemade food and tasty ales, is a place many of the smart folk who’ve visited quite rightly deem a hidden gem. See for yourself by settling down at this destination in Dilhorne, 20 minutes from the rides at one of Britain’s best theme parks, Alton Towers, and the aquatic antics at Waterworld. It's in an easy-access section of Staffordshire, just off the A50 road and 15 minutes' drive from Stoke-on-Trent. Popular Peak District towns like Buxton (25 minutes) and Bakewell (an hour) are easy to get to too. Rather roams over rollercoasters? Potter through the Peak District (25 minutes) – there are plenty of pretty paths over yonder as well as closer to the site if you’d rather not drive. Ambles are to be had in the grounds too, over by the farm animals or to the play area, where mums and dads are regularly seen supervising the kids in front of a scenic background. When the tiddlers start to get peckish, stroll over to the inn for food. The pub is open from lunchtime till late every day but Monday (there are no breakfasts available). And what about those essential amenities of life? The site has separate ladies' and gents' toilet blocks with showers, as well as a washing-up area.

Liked: Very spacious plot and superbly appointed toilet/shower block. Overall great facilities for a small site. Nice views. An enclosed dog walking area is always welcome too.

Disliked: Couldn't use my air fryer or kettle. And the weather....

1 bedroom on-site travel trailer

Liked: The pitches are big and spacious. The ladies toilet and shower block are new and were kept clean at all times. I loved the shower as it was very private and the water was always hot. My husband said that in the men block, the water wasn't hot enough once. The campsite is very clean and well maintained and not too big. The staff were very helpful and friendly. There is a pub on site, we didn't eat there, as we had a bbq and other things, but my son had chips and he said they were good. The site also has a lovely play area, for you ger children. The location was good, as it's close to Alton towers, Peak District, Monkey forest and lots more.

Disliked: No toilet brush in the ladies toilets. A small bin would be useful next to the sinks too.

Liked: Having just stayed here in our caravan for the bank holiday weekend for the first time it won't be the last, little gem of a place, toilets & showers are spotless & the pub is a bonus, friendly bar staff but you need to book a table to eat as it gets very busy especially at weekend, we had the 3 meat sunday lunch & it was lovely ( credit to the cook ) . We will certainly be going back , see you soon 😊

Disliked: Nothing

Powered gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked: Very nice pitch - lots of space, good mixture of shade and sun, plenty of grass around the hardstanding, little picnic benches between the pitches. Great views and a footpath through the big nextdoor field to walk in. The kids liked seeing the cows.

All the facilities were excellent, clean and in good repair.

The beer garden was perfect for a family on a summer evening - it has a nice little playground for the kids, an outdoor bar, a BBQ for burgers and pizza including a children's menu, and lots of outdoor picnic tables with shade.

The pub has cask ale inside (which is great to have on a campsite) - they had three pumps but only one was on.

Disliked: Some very minor quibbles:

Bring cash if you want to eat and drink - the outdoor BBQ was cash only, the pub did cashback but ran out of cash, and the card reader at the outdoor bar kept losing signal. It all worked out in the end but it would have been a lot faster with cash.

They had Hobgoblin Gold, which is a great ale for a sunny evening, but they didn't have any casks outside so we had to go all the way round to the front of the pub to get it.

WiFi and mobile phone signal were spotty - the WiFi was good in the beer garden but our pitch was too far from the router to pick it up.

Local attractions

This is an ace base for trips to Alton Towers (20 minutes’ drive) for folk who fancy riding rollercoasters like the Nemesis and Oblivion. Spend one day scampering among the top-class attractions here, then slow things down the next with countryside explores. The Peak District National Park (around 25 minutes) is full of walking paths, while other spots like Trentham Gardens (20 minutes) are top for traipsing round too. If checking out cheeky creatures is more your bag, head to Trentham Monkey Forest (20 minutes) and wander among the free-roaming animals. Around 140 Barbary macaques live in the woodlands and meadows here – make sure to look up and spot them swinging through the trees. Once you’ve snapped pics of the primates, set your sights on some of the market towns scattered around the area. Stone, a settlement on the Trent and Mersey Canal (15 minutes), is well-regarded for its food and drink options, while Cheadle (55 minutes), just outside the wood-covered Churnet Valley and the scenic Staffordshire Moorlands, is worth stopping in too.
