  • Peaceful dog-friendly motorhome site for adults and children over 14
  • A 35-minute drive to Cannock Chase Forest; 30 minutes to Drayton Manor
  • Barbecues permitted and stall selling eggs on site; rural walks nearby
Partial to peaceful picnics and pedals along a former railway track? Or perhaps hilltop ruins, followed by a swing around the treetops in Cannock Chase Forest? You’ll be primed for such a stay at The Cottage Motorhome Park. Three miles from Stafford Castle and 35 minutes’ drive from Cannock Chase Forest, this dog-friendly site may be tiny, but it has a mighty load of peace. This is rural Staffordshire, so very little will disturb you here, unless you count the birds that visit the site’s mature trees (a nice source of shade, by the way). Mornings might start the sunny side up here, literally, as the site has a wooden stall selling eggs at the entrance to the site and you’ll have permission to get them frying on a barbecue if you wish. Perhaps you’ll want to practise your game face too, as the site has a well-equipped games room available. When you’re ready to venture off site, there are cycles along an old railway line on the 14-mile Stafford Greenway, picnicking galore at the Stafford Castle’s hilltop ruins or many an eatery in Stafford, all within 10 minutes’ drive of the site. Should you rather let the food come to you, there are takeaways that deliver to the site. That way, you can spend your waiting time freshening up in the toilets or shower block, taking the dog around the dog walking field or even squeezing in a quick rural walk.

Powered grass and gravel RV campsite

Liked: Pool and games room which was great for the kids. Local disused railway line walk, great for the dog. Nice facilities and friendly staff.

Disliked: Workman tiling with headphones on and singing, really badly and loud!

Powered grass and gravel RV campsite

Liked: Beautiful park. Spotlessly clean, great facilities including washing machine and tumble dryer. Dog walking area and a lovely garden area to sit in. Games room is a fantastic added extra for those rainy days or just chilled out evenings. I asked for an extra night as my stay was so lovely and it was arranged with no problems at all. For me I also liked that it was aimed at adults and older children so was lovely and quiet.

Disliked: Nothing

Local attractions

Get your pedal on, because there are cycle-easy spots in Cannock Chase Forest (35 minutes’ drive). Whether you’ve got your own bicycle or you’re making use of the bike hire there, you’ll have your pick of leisurely forest routes and slightly madder mountain biking courses for those of you who are more seasoned. Plus, you’ll also have the choice to take to the treetops on the Go Ape courses, in real monkey style. While animals are on your brain, Amerton Farm (25 minutes) will bring you right up close, as the farm runs alpaca and reindeer experiences. Other businesses call the site home and that includes a pottery studio and yoga studio. Along similar lines, Stafford Showground (20 minutes) is a multi-purpose venue that will surely get the party going with events throughout the year. Two top spots to keep up the pace are Drayton Manor Theme Park (half an hour) and Alton Towers (50 minutes), and those of you are craving somewhere a little more regal to wind down after all the thrills of the rides may find just the place in Shugborough Hall (25 minutes), a Georgian mansion house and walled garden.
