  • Peaceful and secluded site with spectacular views
  • In a wildlife haven: listen for owls at night
  • New amenities block including a shower for disabled guests
Your little bears might not want to leave. Big Bear Lodge is a Shrewsbury site with what the owners reckon just might be among the best views in Shropshire – and it's in a spectacularly secluded countryside location where your young can run around and go spotting badgers, foxes, bats, squirrels and even the resident cuckoo that arrives each May. A flock of feathered visitors also flit around this calmly quiet site, including red kites, woodpeckers, swifts, buzzards and even some tame robins – sit peacefully and you may just spy photo opps. You'll hear the local owls hooting at night, and if it's a cloud-free evening you can settle down under the skies for a spot of peaceful stargazing: no light pollution or traffic noise here. The Big Bear facilities include fresh water adjacent to pitches, and an amenities block a short walk away with three showers (including one for disabled guests), heated towel rails, rainfall shower heads and washing-up facilities with hot and cold water. Dogs are welcome on site but must be kept on leads. Big Bear Lodge is also near where the Vyrnwy and Severn rivers meet, so has a wealth of walks very close by – and Shropshire has over 3500 miles' worth of hikes if you want to take things a bit further. Get set to roar with pleasure…

What customers say

Big Bear Lodge is a peaceful, well-kept campsite with spotless facilities. Guests rave about the helpful hosts, great food (pizza, breakfast!), and the handy 24-hour honesty shop. Spacious pitches, a kids' play area, and quiet vibes are often mentioned. Minor issues with tent comfort/gear were noted, but most guests are eager to return.

Wolf's Paw camping pod (two person)

Liked Lovely holiday. Had everything we needed. The honesty shop was well stocked with such a good variety. Shower and toilets were very clean and beautifully decorated. Welcome Book packed with places to visit near by. And food delivery to our door was such a brilliant touch!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The location was good . Hosts were friendly . Grass was kept lovely and short. Nice and safe for kids . Honesty shop was a nice touch . Pizza was amazingly good , thin crispy crust piping hot . Yum reasonably priced breakfast options too .

Disliked One shower too toilets , bit limiting. Shower pressure not great . Field is small so pitches are on top of each other with no option to space out . Only commenting because we prefer a bigger field with option to pick your spot.

From the manager: Hi I am glad you enjoyed your stay and the pizzas that you ordered.

I am sorry you felt cramped, unfortunately you booked on our busiest weekend of the year so we were actually full. This is not usually the case as we are usually quieter but August bank holiday is well known everywhere for being very busy.

We actually have one shower and two toilets for men and for women not for the whole site. The pod area has its own toilets and showers on top of this. As a remote site we can struggle a bit with water pressure but it depends what else is happening, if two people are washing up and some of the 10 showers on site are going it can affect it.

I would also point out you turned up with a tent and a tent box on the car and you hadn't booked for both so this will have affected how you pitch. We can not allow people to choose their own spot because we had people on for one, two, three and four nights so to give people this flexibility of one night stays we have to allocate pitches.

I am glad you would recommend us but felt I should respond to your negative comments so it didn't give people a false idea of the site.

Fantastic little site for a peaceful, relaxed, family weekend.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We had a brilliant weekend at the campsite here. Visiting as a family with primary school aged kids we'd initially booked two nights, but added on a third because we were having such a nice time.

The site itself is small - maybe 15 or so pitches - had a nice peaceful relaxed vibe, and is really well looked after after. There were lots of families with similar aged kids and the kids all got together and played for hours in what is a very comfortable, safe environment, with lots of grassy space and a playground, so we could all get on with some relaxing.

Facilities are fairly basic - toilets and a couple of showers, and there's an honesty shop, which is handy. But there is the option of having pizzas or breakfast cooked for you and brought to your tent! A great perk for that late night arrival or last morning where you've already packed away the cooking stuff - food was really nice too.

Cassie, who runs the place with her family, was lovely to communicate with and couldn't have been more helpful. They work very hard to make sure it's a nice place to stay. There was one night where one of the pitches was making too much noise and when I woke up there was already a message of apology from Cassie, letting us know they'd spoken to the people about quiet hours. Having had problems like this at larger places that go completely unchecked this was really nice attention to detail.

Nearby there's obviously tons of outdoors stuff to do, farm shops, we had a day at British Iron works, which was ace. Then at night, when the clouds part, that spectacular Shropshire night sky.

In all, a great little place and we'd certainly recommend it or return ourselves.

Thanks Cassie and team!

Disliked Hardly worth mentioning, but there's only one shower per sex.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to write the review and for all the positive comments. There was an issue with some noisy guests and it was the busiest weekend of the years so we appreciate your understanding of this.

Hope you will visit again soon Cassie, James and Harriett

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked My son and I lucked out with this site, we had an absolutely wonderful time. The site is beautifully maintained with lots of care. We particularly loved the homemade food (pizzas are delicious and my son raved about the homemade chicken goujons). The cooked breakfasts delivered to your tent are also a fabulous touch, especially for pack-down mornings. We really liked the honesty shop - it was really well stocked, and we also loved the chickens and ducks too.

Cassie and her family are all so nice and friendly. The site is quiet and great for relaxing, which is just how we like it and we both felt very welcome - loved hearing the cows in the morning and the birds chirping. The night sky was incredible too - so black and filled with stars. There’s also a play area for younger children and my son enjoyed playing football with some of the younger boys.

We are really looking forward to booking again and bringing our little dog. Plenty to see and do in the area - we enjoyed days out at Powys Castle, Chirk Castle and Shrewsbury. Hoping to go canoeing next time.

Thank you so much for Cassie, we look forward to booking again!

Wolf's Paw camping pod (two person)

Liked Wonderful site! We used the glamping area with pods and a bell tent. We were really lucky to have the area to ourselves which was fantastic and unusual for the site (was a predicted windy weather week I suspect that was why!) absolutely great pods with all you need and outdoor extras such as benches bbqs and fire pits. On other sites we would usually pay but they are free at Big bear which was a bonus. We ordered pizzas for the first night which was delivered promptly by a summer holiday helper (Harriet😃) they were delicious and cooked on a stone pizza maker and you could tell! They were ordered again for our last night as we couldn’t resist. Hosts James and Cassie are lovely and we chatted with both about booking again next year. We have provisionally booked for the same week in 2026. Can’t wait! ⛺️🎪

Disliked Travelling with a wheelchair user. Disabled facilities and accessibility great just needs some thought to pathways and use of gravel. But we overcome this and my husband was still able to shower and access the block. Cassie also came up with a solution for this which was very thoughtful.

Thank you for the feedback about the gravel and wheelchair users and we are thinking of a solution. Cassie and James

Eagles Nest camping pod (two person, hot tub)

Liked Had the best time in one of the bell tents last week. It slept 4 of us with plenty of room. We ordered pizzas twice from Cassie and they were phenomenal and beautifully delivered by Harriet! (Her daughter) The view is gorgeous and so peaceful. The honesty shop is such a lovely touch too. And handy! Our other family stayed in two of the pods. They were cute, quirky and clean. The site is kept tidy and clean. We will definitely be rebooking.

Disliked The bell tent got quite warm so next time we will take a fan but the heat couldn’t be helped. And the cows mooing first thing in the morning were quite loud but we got used to it! They were just chatting to each other! 😂 we were travelling with my brother who is in a wheelchair so the gravel was a bit of an issue but we over come it by driving him up to the ramp that led to the toilet/shower area and that was he was able to access them from there.

Eagles Nest camping pod (two person, hot tub)

Liked Just got home from a lovely night away with my daughter and what a little gem this place is..!!! We had the best time. Beautiful location, lovely play park which was all enclosed and safe so great when travelling solo with a child.. Clean facilities with lovely family room which was perfect for us to use together.. Our pod was spacious and clean with a lovely hot tub i had trouble getting the little one out of. We had food delivered from the pizza menu in the evening and breakfast the following morning.. Piping hot and delicious.. delivered with a smile by a lovely polite young girl who is a credit to big bear lodge. Thank you so much for our stay we will definitely be back.

Local attractions

This part of England running into Powys and Wales has been popular for yonks with outdoor and active sorts, who come to canoe or fish its waters, canter around the countryside by horseback or foot, climb or mountain bike its peaks, or tackle less trodden options like clay shooting or paragliding. Golf is available locally too. If you're more into sightseeing than activity, Powis Castle, Erddig Hall, Chirk Castle and the Hawkstone Follies are all good local options, or you could have a day out in Shrewsbury to stroll through its Shuts (ancient alleyways) and over its nine bridges. And as for those miles and miles of Shropshire – and Powys – walks? Try a wander around Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall just over the Welsh border, among the wildlife and birds of Lake Vyrnwy, up and down the three peaks of the Breidden Hills, and through Nesscliffe Hill Country Park between Oswestry and Shrewsbury – with a pitstop at fifteenth-century pub the Old Three Pigeons Inn.
