  • Family-friendly site in the Shropshire Hills, near the Welsh border
  • Offa’s Dyke Path 10 minutes’ drive; Ludlow and Shrewsbury 40 minutes
  • Close to hiking and biking trails; campfires and barbecues allowed
Have bike, will travel… If you’re itching to let rip on your mountain bike and are looking for a site close to hills, ridges and challenging trails, Runnis Meadow Camping might just tick all of those boxes. Sitting on the banks of the River West Onny, close to the Welsh border, this family-friendly site has easy access to cycling and walking trails within the spectacular Shropshire Hills. The rugged landscape of Stiperstones National Nature Reserve (15 minutes’ drive), an area of quartzite rock formations, can be explored on foot or by bike. Keep an eye out for red kites and skylarks while you’re there. Walkers can also tackle Offa’s Dyke Path, which follows the English-Welsh border, and Corndon Hill (both 10 minutes’ drive), while mountain-bikers might like to sample the routes in the Carding Mill Valley and Long Mynd (half an hour). In terms of facilities, the site has fresh water on tap, plus showers and a toilet block. There are firepits for hire and bags of logs to buy, and barbecues are allowed. For provisions, you can head into the town of Bishop’s Castle (10 minutes), which also has numerous restaurants and takeaways. There are also several good pubs nearby that would make good rest stops on your walk or bike ride.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked A well maintained and beautiful campsite. Probably the best shower I've ever had at a campsite: super hot with excellent water pressure - and very clean throughout.

The owners were extremely accommodating and clearly care about their business. There's a bell that you can ring for their attention and they promptly arrive on sites to answer any questions or provide support.

We hired a fire pit for two evenings at the cost of £10 and a bag of wood was £5, which was excellent value and enhanced the experience for our 8 year old.

There's a small babbling brook on site, tucked away behind some trees, which was also of interest to our son.

Powys Castle, Montgomery Castle, various hill forts and stone circles are all a short drive away. It's the perfect spot for hilly walks and your fix of history.

Also a range of free-to-use kids games and even football posts!

Disliked It's hard to fault, which is extremely rare! Not a criticism, as it's outside of the owners influence, but there is zero phone or data signal for anyone other than EE. This was brilliant in many ways, but download any maps.ans directions before you arrive!

Liked Great site - flat field surrounded by views of the hills. Great for bird and bat watching as there is a little stream running next to the field and the owner has put out plenty of bird boxes! The site is quiet, no road noise or anything at night.
The facilities are top notch - clean, large showers and toilets.
The owners are always on hand and really friendly.

Disliked Honestly nothing! Great site, we will be back!

Liked Beautiful quiet setting with excellent shower and wash up facilities - plenty of hot water and facilities kept lovely and clean. There are two individual toilets and two "bathrooms" with toilet and shower. Site was not busy so we had no issues with queues. We telephoned as requested on arrival and Simon and the family came straight down and we were able to choose our pitch. Simon was very friendly and suggested walks etc. Drove 10 minutes or so then had a great walk on Stiperstones (2.5 hours with some steep bits!) but did get very wet! Stiperstones Inn was a great end point to dry off and refuel - good burgers. . Dog also enjoyed her stay - be aware there are lots of sheep on the hills so dogs often need to be kept on lead.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Lovely quiet camping field, nice and flat ground for pitching tent and the toilets and showers were kept clean and well stocked. The washing up facilities are very good, with hot and cold tap - not always the case in campsites, so that was appreciated. Host was very friendly and amenable, and having the option to hire fire pit and wood was great. The scenery around the campsite is really lovely, and there are some great walks to be had directly from camp ground.

Disliked No freezer facilities for refreshing ice packs, but not too much of an issue if you are only there for a few days, or have electric hookup.
There are only two showers, so may be an issue at peak times, again not a problem whilst we were there.

Local attractions

The remains of an Iron Age fort are not the only draw at Roundton Hill National Nature Reserve (15 minutes’ drive). This Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) is also a haven for bats (who roost in disused lead mines), lizards and butterflies, plus birds such as yellowhammers and woodpeckers. Had enough of grilling your own meals? A thriving dining scene awaits in Ludlow (40 minutes). For a small market town, Ludlow has a surprising amount of award-winning restaurants, plus traditional pubs and deli shops selling local specialities. If you visit in September, you might also catch the food festival, which takes place inside the medieval castle. In addition to its castle and cathedral, Shrewsbury (40 minutes) is known for the Quarry, a garden stretching along the River Severn. There is plenty to do here besides admiring colourful flower beds and relaxing on the lawn: National Cycle Route 81 skirts the water, you can hire canoes, or let the kids tire themselves out at the Quarry Splash Park.
