Misty morning mosco island, ellesmere lake

  • Lakeside park in a wildlife haven on five acres of grassland
  • Dog friendly with woodland walks; hot tub to hire
  • A few minutes' walk from a nature reserve with fishing pools
Grownups! If you seek serenity, scenery and nature-spotting on holiday, this is the Shropshire site for you. Adjacent to the mere of Colemere and set on the lake's south side, adults-only Colemere Caravan Park is in a countryside setting on five acres of wildlife-laden land with peaceful walks all around – and a quarter of a mile from Wood Lane nature reserve, which the expert folk at the BBC describe as one of the best birdwatching sites in Shropshire. Owners Dave and Ingrid have put a lot of thought into ensuring that guests are kept comfy at this peaceful and popular little site: as well as a good range of accommodation options, guests have access to a fully-equipped and cute social area, all hand-built and including a kitchen with fridge, kettle, utensils, pots and microwave. Firepits are available on request and guests can bring their own barbecues. And for keeping toasty after that, a Nordic wood-fired hot tub overlooking the lily pond is available to hire in the afternoons and evenings for four-hour periods (couples only). Picnic tables are dotted around to place the campfire food on, and the park has well-kept separate bathrooms for ladies and gents.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: The main site and surrounding area.

Disliked: On arrival we pulled into the main site and thought what a beautiful site.
Saw a sign to knock the door on the house.
Knocked the door and waited a while for an answer. The male owner eventually answered the door and didn't know we had booked he then went inside and returned about 10 minutes later with a giant laminated map. He then proceeded to talk about the surrounding area and the trails and walks you could follow.
I asked where should we pitch and was told to exit the main site go into the field next door and park anywhere except by a cone.
We were never given any information about where facilities were including a guest area, toilets, showers, wifi and waste facilities.
We entered the field and could not believe our eyes it was full of weeds and nettles and had a big hill in the middle there were 2 vans in the field and we drove up and around before finding a flat area.
We were extremely dissapointed.
My partner has disabilities with her spine so went to see why we couldn't move onto the main site nearer the toilets and showers.
My partner then seen the female owner and explained that it would be difficult to get back and forward the facilities which were next to the owners house.
Here response was that she wasn't to know and quite abruptly said park in the main field towards the left.
We re entered the main site and found a pitch to the left. As we were unpacking she then re approached and from a distance kept saying she wasn't to know. We had only booked the site the evening before through pitch up as a stopover last minute and just wanted to relax.
The way she spoke was rude and abrupt and left me and my partner actually speechless and on edge.
We decided to just carry on unpacking and ignore the rudeness towards us.
The male owner drove around cutting the grass and didn't even acknowledge we were there.
Once he had finished cutting the grass the male owner his wife and a guest sat in the campsite communal area all evening drinking wine and having food.
It was clear that no guests were wanted on the main site and they were using guest facilities for there own use.
More campers arrived and were all ushered into the awful field next door. I spoke with the other campers and they were also not offered the nice pitches on the main site.
And told to go into the awful field.
We stayed by our van and only when necessary we walked over to use the toilet.
We felt we had pitched up uninvited in someone's private garden party.
It was extremely uncomfortable and they were still there drinking and playing music after we had bedded down.
The only time we felt relaxed was early in the morning when we could approach the facilities with no one around.
I have since read through the reviews and Ingrid and Dave as I now can see their names do not like constructive feedback and they answer back with ude comments and exclamation marks to any unwanted comment. So I will expect the same with this review.
Also I noticed when walking the dogs that there were extension cables plugged into extension cables all around the site along the ground were cables and it seemed extremely dangerous.
The awful field is not in any of there photos online only fake beautiful photo shopped pictures of the surrounding area. It is such a shame as it could of been a fantastic stay with just the right manners and expected treatment as a paying guest.

From the manager: Hello Keith

Thanks for your review , I was confused when you eventually said your wife had a disability walking , as you never mentioned it when you came in or on the booking , I was even more confused as when I saw her walking , she didn't seem to have any walking issues at all ??? As for the none electric zone field [ you booked a none electric pitch] The pitch areas are mowed & the areas in-between are deliberately left uncut [natural ] ! The reason for this is that because we're in an area of SSI [ Special scientific interest ] , Natural England have requested that we rewild as much as possible; there are Barn Owls very close by which actually hunt this area !! The weeds you refer to are actually wild flowers & there s a heavy population of Voles & invertebrates !
Many people like the natural environment that it portrays, the field also has outstanding views at sunset !

It's not unusual for us to socialize with the guests as many will testify ! on this occasion there was myself, Ingrid and a familiar paying guest staying for the weekend.

The communal area is for everyone's use as this is explained on arrival.
Your review does not reflect a true perception overall , Its out of kilter with other reviews & we have in fact been awarded best adults only site in the UK by GO OUTDOORS !!!

Many thanks

David

Liked: Wow this place would rate as the best, it was like being in a Enid Blyton book, rabbits and squirrels and abundant bird life. Great facilities and a nice walk around the Mere.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: Great quiet site. The owner was very welcoming. Toilets were spotless and the site had a beautiful communal room. Lovely surrounding area with good walks. Just what we needed.

Disliked: Pitches were a bit uneven. We found a flat spot, but it was tricky. Next time we'll try to book on the part with electric pitches even though we don't need electric. They looked flatter.

I'd definitely stay again, lovely peaceful break from the city.

Liked: Really peaceful campsite with a welcoming owner. The firepit was a lovely addition to the evening.

Disliked: Not the most level site, but plenty of flat bits. Ideally the site could do with some laundry facilities.

Local attractions

There's stacks to do in the surrounding area, whether you want to stick close to home by foot or pedal, or drive a bit further afield to the towns, tourist attractions and landscapes of Shropshire, Cheshire and north-east Wales – the city of Chester is 40 minutes away and Llangollen on the River Dee reachable within an hour. On the doorstep, tackle the two-mile walk along the canal towpath to Ellesmere or make your way via the purpose-built circular walk and through a wooded area of rhododendrons around the mere and nature reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest with species galore to see like otters, lapwings and water birds. The reserve also has several deep fishing pools well-stocked with catfish and big carp; more fishing – and carp – can be had nearby at Blackmere along the towpath from Colmere. Also nearby, wander into Colemere village to see the fifteenth-century thatched cottages, listed in the Domesday Book, to Ellesmere for food festivals, regattas and boat rides on the mere, or drive to Rednal Karting, Paintballing and Laser for an exciting time ten minutes away. Castles including Chirk and Whittington are a doddle to drive to too. If being on the water is your thing, a narrowboat marina is a three-minute drive away from the caravan park and both Colemere and Whitemere sailing clubs are within easy reach. By car, the standard of whitewater rafting at Bala Adventure and Watersports will have you foaming at the mouth – a milder form of the sport, along with abseiling, gorge walking, a steam railway and horse-drawn boat trips is available over the border in Wales at Llangollen.
