  • Cosy family-run and dog-friendly site in the Cotswolds
  • A 15-minute drive from Blenheim Palace; 25 minutes to Stow-on-the-Wold
  • Barbecues and firepits allowed; access to footpaths and bridleways
After a cosy spot somewhere in the Cotswolds? Historic houses, museums and market towns are out in full force around the cosy Cotswolds Camping in its Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty six miles from Chipping Norton… to be exact, this family-run site is 15 minutes' drive away from Blenheim Palace and within striking distance of many characteristic Cotswolds trails. At the same time, Oxfordshire is the other way and Oxford itself is just 15 minutes’ train journey away from Charlbury Station (five minutes’ drive). As for those of you with a soft spot for a hardcore shopping trip, you won’t be left in the lurch here, as Bicester Village has a shopping outlet 35 minutes’ drive away and Stratford-upon-Avon is 45 minutes’ drive away for handsome riverside scenes and independent shops. Now, how about those hiking shoes? Well, the site has access to fancy footpaths, bridleways and woodland walks, so you’ll be able to get right to the rambling. You might want to stop by the local village, Charlbury, on your way around the local area, as there are food shops, pubs, cafés and restaurants here, all within walking distance of the site. And don’t worry, you’ll be able to carry the good time onto the site, as barbecues and firepits are both permitted – the same for dogs. As for the facilities you’ll have on hand, these include a play area, shower, toilets and a dishwashing area to help you deal with any dirty pots and pans.

What customers say

Spacious, well-kept site with friendly staff. Clean facilities, good vibe & location for Cotswolds. Café/bar, fire pits, woodland play area loved. Some found toilets/showers busy, noise at times, and needed to bring own TP. Great for families & relaxed getaways.

Liked Good clean facilities, plenty of hot water. Perfect location to explore Cotswolds

Disliked Noisy. Some inconsiderate guests made it not great, granted this is beyond the sites control. Be aware this site has a bar which had live music, not a bad thing but our pitch was as close to it as you could get. So if this isn’t your thing be sure to ask for a pitch away from the bar, the music may stop at 11 but the customers don’t. Again not the fault of the site.

Also Pitchup add on the dog fee, which I found out the site doesn’t charge if you book direct.

Liked Lovely area, bus links to other towns/villages. On site witches and wizards themed cafe/ bar (lovelyfood). On site shop and toilet and shower facilities. Art gallery and massage/ beauty treatments available to book. 10min drive to Diddly squat farm.

Disliked When we arrived we were told we were not on booking list. Was made to feel like the guy checking us in was a bit put out we had used the booking site pitch up. 2 of the Mens urinals were out of use and there was no toilet roll in the ladies toilets for 2 of the days we stayed. Electric points are far away on some pitches our 25 meter cable only just reached.

Liked There was nothing to like about the booking experience!

Disliked We booked a one-night electric pitch with Cotswolds Camping. It was very last minute - we booked at 7pm one evening, for a pitch the following evening.

The morning of the proposed trip, we had word that the flight from Brize Norton had been postponed to the following day. Not the campsite’s fault, of course…but what followed was an unpleasant example of a total lack of customer service!

In short, 13 hours after the original online booking (8:30am) I called the number advertised to ask to move the booking onto the following evening. I’d checked, and there were pitches available online. No-one answered, and no voicemail facility was available. I therefore immediately texted Cotswolds Camping on its advertised number (08:33) to explain the situation and ask for confirmation that we could amend our booking to the next night, and asked for confirmation. None came….i therefore called the advertised number again (15:51), and the person answering informed me that as I had not given 3 days notice of the change, they would not move my booking. I pointed out that I couldn’t give three days notice, I had booked for the following evening! I explained I was of course happy to pay the £10 amendment charge.

I was informed that a profit had to be made (fair enough) and that he could “possibly” offer a 20% discount on the following evening. When I mentioned the impossibility of giving three days notice, I was informed I should have taken out Travel Insurance for the trip. Really? For a one night camping trip in my home country? Come on! I asked the person to enquire of the owners whether they would swop the one night for the other, pointing out that as there were multiple pitches still available on both nights, no “profit” was being lost, in fact £10 was being gained.

Again, I heard nothing, so I emailed Cotswolds Camping (16:39) politely setting out the situation and asking for my booking to be swopped, given that the “3 days notice” was not possible to fulfil, and in any event there were many pitches available, therefore no money would be lost by CC (and they would have the £10 amendment fee). I heard nothing….this was becoming a familiar theme!

The next day (ie the day of the trip) I emailed CCamping again (10:43) again politely requesting confirmation that the owners had been able to accommodate the change, with the £10 amendment fee.

At 12:19, I received a reply that basically told me it would “make sense” for me to “book on the day when (family members’) travel arrangements were confirmed” ! Well, good luck with controlling the weather in the Southern Ocean where our family member was due to fly over.

If this had been the middle of August, with CCamplng losing a booking as the result of a requested change, I could completely see the point, and I made this clear to the Warden during my phone conversation. It was not, and they were not losing any money….in fact I checked later on the “original” booking day, and electric pitches were full, so they had £64 for one pitch, our £32 plus another booking. It was a pretty unpleasant experience…..and very rare to have such poor attitudes to potential customers, particularly ones who are asking for something reasonable that will cost the site nothing. Instead, we were treated to lack of responses, and ultimately a pretty rude email…..

We never did camp there, but I hope the on site service is better than that encountered when booking….

Liked Quiet. Pitch small but level.

Disliked Intermittent hot water access in showers and washing up bay.
No access for walking our dog from site. Nearest dog walk across and down the road .
Despite the site being 3/4 empty , disabled member of family not allowed to use nearest toilet. Refused by manager. Resulting in embarrassment and a long walk to the one designated to our pitch.

Die Sanitären Anlagen waren auch okey

Disliked Das Waschbecken zum Geschirr spülen war klein und einfach sehr ungünstig um darin abzuwaschen, ansonsten war wirklich alles super hier 😊

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Location and clean facilities. The site didn't feel too big because there was a variety of fields for different types of users. There was always someone available to get help when needed.

Disliked Beware grass pitches at the end of the paddock! We went in late September and they lost the sun at around 4pm and were the last locations to get the sun in the morning. It happened to be blowing a northerly wind over 3 days and it was bitter! Not the campsite's fault but go prepared. You can light firepits available from the site but logs are only for sake between 6pm and 7pm.

Local attractions

Trail time? You might want to begin with the Roman Fosse Way, passing by the towns of Stow-on-the-Wold (25 minutes' drive) and Moreton-in-Marsh (25 minutes). Or from Lechlade-on-Thames (half an hour), perhaps you'll roll right on to the Thames Path, if you’re not drawn into the water with watersports such as canoeing. Characterful towns and villages are a Cotswolds staple and it shows… Burford (15 minutes) is boxed full of unusual shops, pubs and tea rooms, while in Witney (20 minutes), you’ve got classic entertainment courtesy of a multi-screen cinema, shops and leisure centre mixed in with markets and the historic Cogges Manor Farm. In Woodstock (15 minutes) there’s more history inside The Oxfordshire Museum. Like Chipping Norton (10 minutes), the place has a swimming pool, shops, pubs and tea rooms galore, to add to Chipping Norton’s theatre and cinema. Historic are many of the houses around here, and that includes the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Blenheim Palace (15 minutes), the Jacobean Chastleton House (20 minutes) and or the 18th-century Buscot Park (35 minutes). For more activities in the throw of it all, there’s Cotswold Wildlife Park & Gardens (25 minutes) and Bourton-on-the-Water’s equestrian centre, brewery and motoring museum (half an hour).
