  • Small site five minutes' walk from a pub in Weston-on-the-Green
  • Just off Junction 9 of the M40 with good access to Oxford
  • Café on site with homemade meals and ice creams
Good things await for those who grab a berth at Godwin's Caravan and Camping Site, in the Oxfordshire village of Weston-on-the-Green. For starters, space seekers should be pleased to see that there’s plenty of breathing room around this former dairy farm – excellent news for kids or dogs that need a bit of haring-about time after being cooped up in the car. Depending on where you’ve plonked down you may find that your nearest neighbours are the resident beef cattle, sheep or horses; it’s worth keeping your eyes open for sightings of the hedgehogs that often scuttle about the place too. Perhaps most crucially for those whose stomachs dictate a site’s success is the presence of a café that serves up a tempting range of freshly cooked goodies: breakfasts (no rush – they’re served all day), salads, cakes and coffees, plus cheeses, pies and the like to take away. And the crème de la crème – literally: homemade ice cream in up to 16 (yes, a lipsmacking 16) different flavours. Evening appetites can be sated with a barbecue out on the field, or trotting off to the local pub five minutes’ walk away. The site added a new toilet and shower block in 2018. And how to get to this little slice of rural loveliness? The village is just a few minutes’ drive from the A34 and Junction 9 of the M40, making it both a useful stopover on cross-country voyages and a handy spot for Oxfordshire breaks (perhaps taking in Oxford, Blenheim Palace or bagging bargains in Bicester).

Liked: Close proximity to M40, Oxford, Bicester Village and a pub that has very good food.

Disliked: The site is simply a field with some electricity hookups and a small toilet block. There are no other services (if there is a cafe I didn’t see it) and no security. In view of this, when (presumably) the owner did turn up we got into an exchange about his pricing policy. He became very annoyed and thrust the 30 pounds I’d paid into the van. I tried to talk to him to explain that I wasn’t after anything for free, just a fair price for the services offered. I’ve traveled 7500 miles in my van this summer, always staying in campsites. I felt the charge here was very high for the level of services offered. The guy wouldn’t talk to me and stormed off in his car. I was left alone in a field feeling extremely uncomfortable. I didn’t feel I could stay under these circumstances so had to find somewhere else to stay nearby where the owners were very nice and accommodating.

Liked: Location Size of field

Disliked: Grass was not short. Cut grass had not been collected so it got everywhere. Toilet / shower block, quite new, but broken toilet seats, taps too powerful water splashed everywhere, no blade to wipe shower floor, not particularly clean. I have photographic evidence but am not keen to use it.

Liked: Everything! Very peaceful site, good level pitches, fabulous modern exceptionally clean toilet/shower block. Great walks around farm & beautiful nearby village. 2 pubs for meals etc 15- 20 min walk. Cafe on site. Definitely will re-visit 100%

Disliked: Nothing, possibly have a tow car though if travelling in a motorhome as location a bit remote.

Liked: Everything Lovely pitch with electric and water in the corner of a large field. Two great thatched roof pubs in easy walking distance. Milk Shed on site serving quality food, drinks and fab ice cream. Very easy going, and friendly greeting on arrival. Good clean toilets and facilities and great location to explore Oxfordshire.

Disliked: Nothing about the site but the Milk Shed stops serving food at 2:30pm, which caught us out but is open until 3.30pm for drinks and ice cream.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Friendly host that welcomed us on arrival. Spacious field that is flat. Peaceful with a laidback atmosphere. Good shower, toilet and washing up facilities. All were nice and warm and very clean. Very convenient for the Oxford Park and Ride. 2 pubs within walking distance and a upmarket cafe on the same site as the campsite.

Disliked: There was quite a bit of traffic noise, but this wasn't a big problem for us. It's just the price you pay for being 10mins from the outskirts of Oxford. The cafe on the farm site (not owned by the campsite) was quite expensive and far busier than we expected, but the food and coffee were very nice. There's no Internet access here.

Powered grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Nice and spacious pitches, clean facilities, nice pubs and food options around, public transport around the corner for trip to Oxford (40 mins), very welcome and warm reception by owner Neil. Also good walking options for your dog. Highly recommend a visit to Chequers pub for dinner!

Disliked: The loose leftover grass after mowing (you take it inside), showers have little room to keep stuff dry, focets are a challenge (too much water pressure to wash in any normal way).

Local attractions

Straighten up your mortar board and get set to mingle with the clever bods of Oxford University – it’s 20 minutes' drive or so to get into the city centre to tour the handsome college buildings and gardens, visit the Ashmolean Museum or see if you can get to grips with the art of punting (at least enough not to be permanently wedged in the riverbank…). Leave the city behind and you’ve not seen the end of the area’s gorgeous architecture: the 17th-century house and walled gardens of Rousham House and Gardens are about 15 minutes away, as is the grand UNESCO-listed Blenheim Palace. Pretty things on a smaller scale can often be found in the designer outlet stores 10 minutes away at Bicester Village; if the idea of a shopping day has you rolling your eyes, perhaps a round of golf (five minutes’ drive) or a race day at Silverstone (25 minutes) will be more to your taste.
