  • Secluded luxury glamping pods half a mile from Southwell town centre
  • Half an hour's drive from Sherwood Forest; 5 minutes from racecourse
  • Units with ensuite bathrooms, kitchenettes and underfloor heating
If it's time to take a break from busy daily life, bring the pace down a few notches with a stay at Southwell Retreat, a secluded site set in a quiet, rural part of Nottinghamshire, half a mile from the centre of Southwell. Sit back and snuggle in the cosy comfort of your well-equipped unit with underfloor heating, stretching out either on the double bed or the sofa bed. There’s also a small kitchenette with a fridge, toaster, kettle and crockery, as well as an ensuite bathroom with shower. Bedding and towels are provided, and one of the huts is reserved as a pet-friendly place for a small and well-behaved dog to put up his or her paws (for a small extra charge). If you’re bringing the four-legged friend, whisk them off on one of the many woodland and countryside walks in the local area; cycling’s also a fine way to while away your time in Nottinghamshire, with the trails of Sherwood Forest a half-hour drive away. Urban sights are around as well, with Newark-on-Trent a 20-minute drive away, and Nottingham and Lincoln accessible in less than 45 minutes. Back on site, the pods have private picnic benches outside to help you do exactly what you came here to do: chill out with a dose of fresh air.

Bluebell camping pod (hot tub, no pets)

Liked: The pod was gorgeous! Had everything necessary to make our stay comfortable and the extras I ordered were perfect. The pod was spotless and the book file about the local area was a good to have. The owner was also very lovely. I had a problem figuring something out and I sent a quick text and she called me straight away and also came over to us in the morning and suggested some lovely places for breakfast, couldn’t have asked for more!

Local attractions

The park’s next door to an old National Trust-protected workhouse (five minutes’ walk), an early-19th-century building that once housed the area’s needy. Nowadays, it’s a place for gandering at exhibitions depicting what life was like for people in poverty during the Victorian era. Central Southwell, half a mile away, is also steeped in the past thanks to the minster, which is said to have one of the finest naves in Europe; the market town’s also known as the birthplace of Bramley apples and activities are held annually to celebrate the fruit. For goings-on across the year, check out the horse-related events at Southwell Racecourse (10 minutes’ drive), or admire the livestock at the family-friendly White Post Farm (15 minutes) if there’s no racing happening during your visit. To tire the kids out, let them take on the treetop challenges and zipwires at the Go Ape adventure park in Sherwood Forest (25 minutes) or simply on a stroll around the paths while pointing out ancient oak trees that have survived for hundreds of years. Younger travellers may also like to be set loose in Newark’s castle or taken on boat trips across the town’s river (but be warned: they might balk at being dragged along to the shops in the pretty Georgian market square).
