  • Dog-friendly site on peaceful farmland down a pretty country lane
  • On the edge of the Chiltern Hills, 10 minutes’ drive from Berkhamsted
  • Tea rooms and a village pub a short walk away; plenty of local walks
Meadow View Farm is a peaceful sort of place, down a pretty country lane three miles from Berkhamsted in the Hertfordshire countryside. Those of you who can’t pass up a gorgeous walking location will be in a fine spot here because getting out across the fields or into surrounding woodland is all rather easy. As well as being a peaceful farmland setting, Meadow View Farm caters to the basic camping retreat rather than one with lots of frills. Who needs much more, when there’s a toilet and wash basins, as well as views of the fields? The owners are always around to help with directions to the local attractions. The site is on the edge of the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so these could include beauty spots and historical sites. When you want a caffeine fix, there are tea rooms with a vine-covered outdoor area in Little Heath, five minutes’ walk away. Potten End is another cosy village with a friendly pub-restaurant, 15 minutes’ walk away. Otherwise, take a little drive (10 minutes to be exact) into Berkhamsted, a historic town with lots of small shops, bars and restaurants to satisfy your appetite.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: A warm and natural welcome by the owner who obviously lives the land. Loved the natural surroundings, felt like good old-fashioned proper camping. Best sleep in years and the sunlight fell across the surrounding fields beautifully in the morning. Sufficient toilets, so no horrible chemical smell..other campsites have too many! Fairly small fields so felt cosy and immersed in British countryside. A couple of groups chatting with low music but very respectful and quiet by mid-evening. A good weekend getaway, although planes fly over still very peaceful and this occurs over most of the Chilterns anyway.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike except plane noise overhead but this wasn't that intrusive and this occurs around most home counties anyway.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Entry to site was a little confusing and none of the given telephone numbers connected. However I found the main farm house and pressed the door entry system. The site was spacious and well fenced off, essential as I have an inquisitive 6 month old puppy. The site was fairly empty so she had lots of room to run around. Minimum facilities, 2 portaloos, stand pipe for water and rubbish bins which led to it being very quiet and an ideal stopover for those travelling around. Lovely walksnearvy, Studham common and Dunstable Downs in easy reach.

Disliked: Grass was a bit long and was full of prickly nettles in some parts.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Setting was great, kids can run free whilst us parents sit back and enjoy a glass of wine watching the sunset. Only 40 minutes drive from north London makes it the perfect quick escape on a Friday night!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: It was very peaceful and lovely. The camp site was spacious with good view. The owner was also very kind, flexible, helpful, and made sure we could have a good time.

Disliked: It is a basic camp site with one portaloo and no washing station but one single tap without any light. It didn’t bother us, but might be quite basic for some people.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: The space! Such a large field with no pre marked pitches.

Disliked: A single portaloo as the only facility might have been a struggle if the site had been busier
