Sunny evening at holingwood

  • Simple, family-run caravan site with views of the Black Mountains
  • A 25-minute drive to Hereford and Wye Valley; 35 minutes to Hay-on-Wye
  • Dog-friendly pitches with access to a footpath; country pubs nearby
So, you’ve got eyes on the Black Mountains for hiking, gorge walking and canoeing… or on Hay-on-Wye for a feast of bookshops and watersports on the river Wye. A 25-minute drive from Hereford and 35 minutes from Hay-on-Wye, Hollingwood Farm is a dog-friendly caravan site where the Black Mountains and the Golden Valley are your views… peaceful, simple and stunning. While you become part of this working farm site for a few days (or however long you’ve got in mind), cosy country pubs might become a familiar way to end the day, as there are a few serving local food and ales around 10 minutes’ drive away… or perhaps you’ll want to scrape up the scraps from the local farm shop (10 minutes' drive) for a barbecue back on site before the sun goes down. Historic market towns are a common sight around here too, as are footpaths with miles of walking. In fact, there’s a footpath that’s accessible directly off the pitches and it goes quite far away. Over in Hay-on-Wye, however, canoeing on the river could form part of your day, along with a look around the booksellers, cafés and other upbeat places to sit and eat. On site, there aren’t any toilets and showers, but each pitch comes with its own water tap (that’s water bottles, washing up and that sort of stuff sorted) and you’ll have access to waste and chemical disposal too.

Liked Everything! The views were wonderful. This site is high and in the lovely sunny weather we had visibility was great. It is on a working farm but apart from the cows, which you get used to hearing, it was very peaceful too. The on pitch services included grey waste, electric and tap. The couple who own it were very friendly, helpful and informative. Look out for Fred Flintstone's tractor.

Disliked Only drawback was no toilets or showers, but this was clearly stated on booking. It is only for self contained MH. The black waste is a bit of a walk. This didn't bother us but might a less able person.

Liked Everything was excellent. The site is surrounded by fantastic views.
Mervyn the farmer is charming and friendly.
He was very patient and kind to our Granddaughter Erin who enjoyed hearing about the farm animals. It is total peace the only noise being birdsong and occasional mooing cattle.

Disliked Nothing to dislike.

One of the best small sites we have ever stayed on.

Liked Absolutely fabulous place. Can’t rate it highly enough. The farm is pristine and Mervyn, the farmer gave us a guided tour. Mervyn and his wife were lovely very friendly and helpful. We bought lovely fresh eggs from them and were very lucky to see their week old puppies. This is an ideal place away from the rat race to unwind and relax. Stunning views and the skies at night were amazing, great for star gazing. The place is extremely quiet, no Road noise all you hear are the birds and cows. I can honestly say that in 25 years of caravaning it’s the best place we’ve ever stayed. On the practical side having your own water supply and grey water waste on each pitch along with ehu was brilliant.

Liked This is an absolute gem of a place and as such, Im worried leaving such a good review will mean I can't get a pitch next time, selfish I know :) We wanted a short weekend break, not too far from home and this was the perfect find. It is small site, but plenty of room on each fully serviced pitch, which has electric hook up, drinking water tap and grey waste pipe. The site is peaceful and relaxing, with unrivalled views from the Black mountains to Malvern hills and beyond. Mervin was lovely and friendly and popped round each day to make sure everyone was ok. The site is on a slight slope ,but there are plenty of blocks available to level up, and Mervin is happy to assist. We will definitely be back, if we can get a pitch that is..

Liked A beautiful site the scenery is very special, the sight is basic no showers or toilets but we didn't care we had our own, the site is small but so looked after, when we arrived it had rained hard the day before so the ground was very soft but Mervyn the owner was brilliant helping with everything he could for us and others. Mervyn checked on us a couple of times to see if we were ok. If you want the toilets and showers and noise do not go here but if you want first class customer service, peace and quiet and scenery to die for then this is the place to go and the fresh free range eggs we took home were yummy. Thank for a lovely stay away from the rat race

Local attractions

How’s your gang’s team spirit? With Battlelands Paintball (15 minutes’ walk) so close by, it’ll be easy to put it to the test, the same for your aim. It’s just one of a number of activities that will get your blood thumping in the local area, as with the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (25 minutes’ drive) within reach, ways to while away the day in an active way include hiring a bicycle, walking the Wye Valley Walk or canoeing or kayaking on the river. Outdoor pursuits are a hallmark of the Black Mountains (an hour and five minutes) too… whether it’s rock climbing, caving, gorge walking or simply hiking, there are many ways to raise your pulse. Llangorse Lake (55 minutes) is another one of those places, as the activity centre runs all manner of watersports. Back through the history books… the Big Pit National Coal Museum (40 minutes) will certainly ignite the history of Welsh coal mining. The coal mine is now a museum with tours. As for other sites that have stood the test of time, there are the Norman ruins of Grosmont Castle (15 minutes) or the Neolithic burial chamber at Arthur's Stone (25 minutes).
