Fenced pitching area
Spacious grass pitches
Plenty of space

  • Simple pitches at a 12-acre site on the banks of the River Wye
  • On the edge of Ross-on-Wye, 10 minutes' drive from Symonds Yat
  • River access for canoes and paddleboards; clubhouse with bar on site
Planning a bit of paddleboarding or canoeing during your Herefordshire break? The River Wye has to be one of the best spots in the area for watersports, and you’ll have direct access to the water when you stay at The Ross Rowing Club Campsite. This is a fabulous location for getting out onto the river, but you don’t have to be a watersports type to enjoy a stay here – the 12-acre site is also a lovely place just to unwind with a picnic or spend a couple of hours reading your book by the water’s edge. There’s plenty of space to relax at the well-spaced pitches, and you’ll have access to simple facilities including a washing-up area, chemical disposal point and toilet block with showers. Open fires are banned here, but barbecues are allowed as long as they’re kept off the ground (both rules in place to protect the grass). However, if you’re here on a Friday night in summer (and some Saturdays too), the place to be is the clubhouse, where the licensed bar is open to guests and there’s often a barbecue on the go for a sociable outdoor meal. The clubhouse also hosts various events during the year – from a beer festival to dragon boat racing – with campsite guests welcome to join in the fun. If it’s not a clubhouse day, don’t worry – this convenient location is only about 10 minutes’ walk from the centre of Ross-on-Wye so you’ll be within easy reach of several places to eat and drink, plus supermarkets for all your snacks and barbecue supplies.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Pitch was perfect, we were at the furthest side of the campsite and still not too far for toilets and shower block. Felt very safe and lovely to be so close to the river and a very short walk into Ross on Wye town.

Disliked: Pitch row areas could have been clearer but not too difficult to find.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: So much space! Only a handful of other vans/tents with a college group on a separate field. Pitch nice and level and there was a low level amount of road noise from nearby A40 but didn’t bother me and I’m a light sleeper.
Didn’t use the facilities so can’t comment but they looked ok.

Disliked: Managing two locked gates with codes is a bit of a nuisance when you’re travelling alone but understand why they are needed.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Handy for the town
Facilities clean

Disliked: No real supervision and it is a public place as lots of paths through the site
Allocated spaces seems random especially as really quiet when we were there.
Getting onto the site a little haphazard as not sent gate code

Local attractions

Canoeing and paddleboarding are popular activities around here – launch from the site to explore the River Wye, stopping at waterfront pubs and picnic spots along the way, or head to Symonds Yat (10 minutes’ drive) to paddle through a spectacular gorge. The riverside village is also a favourite spot for fishing, walks, cycling and birdwatching – buzzards and peregrine falcons can sometimes be spotted here. A location on the England/Wales border means Herefordshire has been fought over throughout history – and the upshot of that is several castles for modern-day visitors to explore. Three of the best nearby are Goodrich Castle (10 minutes), National Trust - Skenfrith Castle (20 minutes) and the grand Eastnor Castle (25 minutes). For family-friendly days out, take the kids to walk among colourful insects at the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo (10 minutes), look out for outdoor artworks at the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail (25 minutes) or ride the steam trains at Perrygrove Railway Adventure (25 minutes).
