Camping this way

  • Simple pitches at a peaceful Herefordshire working smallholding
  • Hereford 15 minutes' drive; five minutes to the Wye for fishing
  • Family-friendly site; kids can collect eggs and feed animals
Heading to Herefordshire in search of a slice of the simple life? You’ll certainly get that at Primrose Smallholding and Camping – guests here join the goats, sheep, chickens and other resident animals at a working smallholding in a lovely peaceful setting near the little village of Holme Lacy. Book in at this family-friendly site and you’ll be staying in a three-acre field where guest numbers are capped to make sure everyone has plenty of space to pitch up and relax, and for kids to run about and play games in the open air. They’ll also be able to enjoy farm activities like collecting eggs or feeding the goats and sheep. Eggs are also available to buy for a taste of the farm with your breakfast or dinner. To cook up those meals, you’re welcome to bring along a barbecue or firepit (no open or ground fires, thanks, and please supervise children at all times). There’s a tap in the field to provide water for drinking, cooking and washing up; other facilities include a free electric central charging point (with six outlets) and two portable toilets that are thoroughly cleaned and deodorised regularly throughout the day. Heading out and about, there are plenty of walks nearby (Haugh Wood, 10 minutes’ drive away is a favourite) and the River Wye is five minutes’ drive away for coarse fishing, canoeing or paddleboarding. And while this place feels very rural, it’s actually only a 15-minute drive to the centre of Hereford – head there by day to explore the historic city centre or ask on site about the subsidised taxi service for an evening out.

What customers say

This roomy, peaceful site gets a thumbs-up for its friendly owner, Paul, who runs fun animal feeding for kids. Guests love the clean facilities (portaloos, hot showers) and the lovely country vibe. It's great value, perfect for families or solo travellers wanting a quiet escape with lots of space. A few folks wished for hot water at the wash-up sinks and more recycling bins.

It was lovely to meet your family and I'm really glad you enjoyed the overall experience - despite the sudden turn in weather! Well done for braving the winds and rain.
I do hope you had a safe journey home and we very much look forward to seeing you again next year.

From the manager: Thank you for your review Charlotte. You’re quite right, we are only 4 miles from Hereford but far enough away to feel rural - Best of both worlds! I’m glad your children enjoyed the animal feeding sessions, we plan to have an even bigger variety of farm animals next year! Hope to see you again soon.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We absolutely loved our weekend away at Primrose small holding. From the moment we arrived we felt relaxed and a very safe environment for children. Loved the animal feeding at 9am each morning! The owners could not do enough for us, checking daily if we were all ok. It was bank holiday weekend so the site was a little busier, so extra toilets were brought in to assist. There was only one shower but this did not bother us, we just used it when we came back from a day of walking which was a very quiet time on the site, so no queueing. If you are happy for basic facilities at a very reasonable cost, with the warmest welcome from the owners, then I would definitely book here!

From the manager: Hi Emma, thank you so much for taking the time to leave us such a nice a review. Its great to hear you were able to relax and chill out whilst your children played. Our animal tour has proved very popular (it was very busy over the Bank Holiday weekend but that all added to the fun!
We appreciate your comments about the site facilities and we have lots more exciting ideas for new infrastructure and facilities ready for next year! Thanks again for visiting Primrose Smallholding.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The family owners were really polite and welcoming. Would help when ever he could. Just had to txt to him. Felt very safe as the gate was coded. He came round in his truck many times a day to check everyone was ok and the facilities were kept clean. There is animals to see each morning at 9am you can go walk round with them. Feed the goats, let the chickens out and feed the sheep. My children loved how he answered all the questions. Would definitely like return next season.

From the manager: Hello Christine
Thank you very much for your detailed review. We really appreciate your feedback and you make several useful points about site safety and security. We do our best to make the site accessible but you're correct, it has an all round perimeter fence and coded security gates to prevent unwelcome visitors. I'm glad your children enjoyed the animal tour. We hope to expand this in time for next season as it has proved so popular. Sorry we ran out of fresh eggs, our little chickens couldn't keep up with demand! Hope to see you again next year.
