  • On the banks of the River Wye a short stroll from Hereford centre
  • A 10-minute walk from the Mappi Mundi, Hereford Museum and lots more
  • Mooring and boat launch space along with spectacular river views
A site with rowing club in its name is pretty likely to be close to water. And so it is with Hereford Rowing Club, set on the banks of the River Wye with spectacular waterside views and steps leading down to the water. Pull up here to get your head down for a night on a canoeing trip, or make the club your base for days of rowing on the Wye or getting adrenalised along the river rapids (canoes and paddleboards can be delivered to the site if you need to hire either). Less actively, this excellent setting is only five minutes' walk from the centre of Hereford and the fab Mappi Mundi, and 20 miles from the acclaimed bookish town of Hay on Wye. Walks in the lush surroundings of Herefordshire and the Wye valley are also a big draw around here, as are the handsome villages of the Black and White Trail, within 15 miles, and sampling as much as poss of fresh Herefordshire produce and cider. The closest pub/restaurant to the site is within a few minutes' walk, and loads more pubs and restaurants (as well as nightclubs) are 10 minutes away in Hereford. Pitches are in a dog-friendly green field, with first-rate views of the Wye. The site has plenty of parking, mooring space and room to launch and land canoes and kayaks, along with shared amenities of showers, toilets, chemical disposal and a washing-up area. Barbecues and campfires are allowed as long as they're raised off the ground. There is a bar here, but please note that it may be closed inside at weekends during the evening because of private functions.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Plenty of space, quiet areas or busy areas by the river - lots going on, or be secluded away from the river.
Easy walk into town.

Disliked Depending where you are pitched it's a long way to chemical disposal. And you have to walk through the washing-up area.

Access to the river, price, felt safe as a solo traveller…

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Super friendly welcome, very relaxed campsite, ideal as canoe hire pickup was from campsite, nice bar to have a drink looking over the Wye, easy 10 min walk into town.
If you like Japanese food check out Jins of Hereford.

Disliked Nothing, great value and great campsite. Access to toilets and showers up some steps which was fine for us but if you have mobility issues could be difficult.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Lots of space, good setting, big level pitches. Staff very helpful. Canoe race taking place whilst we were there, so great atmosphere. We used the site as we had an evening function in the city and it was cheaper than a taxi home (only 10 miles away!). Will definitely use the site again.

Disliked Chemical disposal point not obvious.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Everything. Friendly greeting by staff on arrival. Plenty of space around each pitch. Riverside location with a great path alongside to walk the dog. Showers and toilet clean. Washing up area and Elsan point more than adequate. Use of the club bar. Only a 5 minute walk into Hereford centre. Excellent value for money, will definitely be staying here again.

Disliked Nothing really. Electric hook up would have been nice - but we knew this beforehand and it would not deter us staying again. I'm clutching at straws here.

Excellent will definitely visit again

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Good sized pitch even though Site was busy.. Great breakfast at the Rowing Club on the weekend. Very easy walk to town. 24 hour access to showers and toilets, plenty of hot water.

Disliked Not a dislike, but option of electric hook up would be nice if we had stayed longer

Local attractions

This splendid setting close to the cathedral city of Hereford has it within a short stroll of many top Herefordshire attractions including Hereford Cathedral and the spectacular Mappi Mundi; Hereford Museum and Art Gallery; the Black and White Houses museum and the Hereford Cider Museum, all under 10 minutes' walk away. The Courtyard theatre and arts centre is within 15 minutes' walk. More top Herefordshire attractions a little further afield include the villages of the acclaimed Black and White Trail, a 40-mile circular trail around the county's half-timbered houses. The trail starts and finishes in the town of Leominster, well worth a potter around before or after the drive for its antiques and collectables (Weobley, Eardisland, Pembridge and Dilwyn are all top spots for pitstops). The gardens, parkland and 15th-century house of Hampton Court are 10 miles way, in the village of Hope under Dinmore, near Leominster. There's also the handsome riverside market town of Ross-on-Wye 14 miles away, above the Wye and with access to the Wye valley, the Forest of Dean and the popular village and famed viewpoint of Symonds Yat. Within 20 miles, browse the antique shops and many bookshops of Hay-on-Wye: buying a tome here is very much a must.
