  • Peaceful, sheltered field surrounded by trees with abundant wildlife
  • Walk to the Lower Woods nature reserve; a 35-minute drive to Bristol
  • Families and dogs welcome; relaxed, 'leave no trace' destination
If it’s time to take some time-out in the Gloucestershire countryside, Horwood Farm Camping has got your back. The one-acre field is tucked in a shallow valley surrounded by trees, streams and abundant wildlife. The owners can’t wait to welcome you in; they’re very proud of their peaceful location, small herd of Hereford cattle, wildlife and wildflowers meadows, which are part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest. This is a pop-up site with a limited number of pitches, just to make sure that campers have plenty of space, peace and quiet. There’s a tap and a clean portable toilet, and you’re welcome to choose where to park and pitch up. The owners want guests to leave no trace, so they’ve very handily provided a raised firepit with a heat mat should you wish to get some flames going come evening time. They can provide firewood too – so just bring your matches, own snacks and fireside tales. There are footpath links heading into the Lower Woods Nature Reserve within 10 minutes’ walk of the site, so wildlife-spotters will have plenty to occupy themselves with. If you’d like a little city action, Bristol is 35 minutes’ drive away. There are shops 10 minutes’ drive away in Chipping Sodbury for any supplies and pubs in Wickwar within half an hour’s walk of the site.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Very quiet and peaceful, loved the bats that came out at night. Could hear the owls. Friendly owners and fire pit and wood included which was lovely. Would stay again as just a couple.

Disliked: Field was fenced off so we couldn’t do quite as much exploring from the pitch as we had thought

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Absolutely loved this site. Basic with just a portaloo and water tap...but this is what I personally love. Longish grass, but again I much prefer that to mown grass. A small site and very quiet.
Owners really lovely, friendly. and helpful...the farmer was kind enough to answer my questions about his cattle and a bit about hay-making. Came down once or twice a day to check how we were doing.
It was very nice to be able to have a fire (small fire pit thingy on a stand with a special mat to put underneath so as not to scorch the grass...all provided by farmer, plus firewood).
My grand-daughter and I saw deer in the next field and heard owls calling in the evening...delightful.
There are plenty of walks through the woodlands nearby and Wickwar is not far away to easily walk to. There is one pub there which does meals (but check what day(s) it is shut. There are no shops, but there is a tea room. There are also a couple of children's parks plus nice walks outside of the village.
If you have a car or don't mind walking quite a bit farther and back I would recommend the Rose and Crown in Rangeworthy, nice, friendly pub which does good, reasonably-priced meals.
If you need shops, then Chipping Sodbury is the closest place to go (about three and a half miles away, I think).
This is a great camp site if you want peace and quiet and don't need or want extra facilities.
I would definitely go back if I want a break not too far from where I live.

Disliked: Nothing.

Liked: Beautiful surroundings. Flat camping space.Buckets with fire pits and accessories. Clean portaloo. Very welcoming hosts.

Easy walk to pub and local coffee shop.

A wonderfully quiet, back to basics, camping space with no light pollution… ideal for star gazing and enjoying being with nature.

Disliked: The weather but the best hosts in the world can’t fix that!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The hosts Sarah and Alex were incredibly kind and hospitable, and helped us out quite a lot during our stay (4 nights) and we couldn’t ask for better hosts! Nothing was too much of a bother for them and they helped with charging our power banks when we needed a boost! We were grateful! Alex gave us a good introduction to the campsite, the wood fire supplies and the surrounding woodlands and lovely spots to go for!
The site itself it well kept and mostly flat, so plenty of options to pitch up a tent. Drinking water and safe camping fire kits provided, it made the experience so much better! Nothing like having a proper bonfire by the camp!
The walks that we had were all wonderful and special! Really immersed in nature and woodland spirit! Easy manageable tracks means it would be a bit hard to get super lost!
There is a wonderful pub recommended by Alex which we check out and the food was indeed superb! So worth the visit!
Overall we had a fantastic stay! Would definitely come again with my girlfriend

Disliked: Stocked up porterloo but it started to stink pretty bad at the end of (4 days, with often use by all campers) it could really benefit from being a compostable loo house, much more eco friendly, and also, I have been in a couple and they never smelled. At the end of our stay the stench in the porterloo was barely tolerable.

From the manager: Hi Diego, We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay, I’m so sorry about the portaloo issue, we had issues trying to get the suppliers out that week as apparently the drivers were off sick - be assured we will definitely not be using them again and we are also currently looking into other options for next summer season! All the best, Sarah

Liked: Hosts were very polite and accommodating of me and my two friends. Gave us information about local walks which was great!

Even though the weather wasn't the best, we were provided with a lovely relaxing location as well as wood and a firepit which was amazing!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Lovely quiet campsite located down the end of a country lane. Beautiful walks nearby for our two dogs and a stream for the children to play in. Plenty of space on the site for my boys to run around. Free firewood and firepit provided which was lovely. A relaxing stay enjoyed by the whole family. Only facility on site (as advertised) was a portaloo, which was all we needed. This was kept spotlessly clean.
Great host too, thank you.
