Field

  • Peaceful site set in the Royal Forest of Dean
  • A 20-minute drive from Tintern Abbey and Chepstow Castle
  • Less than a mile from two excellent village pubs
Green fields galore + a meandering brook + gently sloping hills = a splendid spot to pitch up. Beanhill Farm may look like a humble enough place, but its location in the Royal Forest of Dean (how posh) puts it firmly into 'excellent area' territory. In this secluded corner of Gloucestershire, guests can take in valley views by day and stargazing opportunities overhead by night (a firepit and wood can be arranged to keep you warm after dusk). The prevailing colour of those views depends on the season: bluebells fill the surrounding woods in spring, while bright yellow rapeseed takes over for a bright backdrop in summer months. The A48 is less than a mile away, making it easy to plan day trips either side of the Welsh border. The nearest supermarket, in the nearby town of Lydney, is a 10-minute drive away; if you'd rather someone else sorted the eats, stroll down into Alvington (20 minutes' walk) for local food and an ale or two at one of two local pubs. Barbecues are allowed for open-air cookouts, and you’re welcome to bring your dog along for this rural jaunt. All the essentials – a washing-up area, toilet block and showers – are provided to keep everyday life ticking along.

Highly-rated site for its beautiful, peaceful setting & clean facilities. Guests loved the spacious pitches, friendly owners & wildlife. Some noted unisex washrooms, shower tokens & sloping pitches, but most had an excellent stay & plan to return.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Quite with great dark sky. Big open space. Lovely showers and hot water to clean dishes. Fire pits and very good recycling bins.

Disliked Not a negative, just for information. Most of the field is at an angle so unless you are on the top flat section you are going to need massive wedges to get level.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked It was not busy and there was plenty of space to pick from although it was all on a slope … the few flat pitches were taken!
The toilet, shower and washing up areas were clean and tidy but with limited hot water!

Disliked The sloped pitches.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked freezer for ice blocks was very useful. owner was friendly, relaxed atmosphere. toilets and showers were clean, good recycling facilities and washing up area. lots to do in the area.

Disliked You have to pay for the shower when it is quite expensive for a non electrical pitch. The shower only lasts for 5 mins

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Beautiful and quiet. A very peaceful stay.

Disliked We discovered that the lake is no longer available to guests, which was disappointing. We have elderly dogs, so there wasn't really anywhere too walk them. There wasn't any info warning us that the lake was no longer open on the website. I think the photos of the pond area should be taken off if you can't walk around it anymore. Or at least a statement put up to let us know before we book. We weren't the only campers disappointed that it wasn't open.

From the manager: The photos on the website of a lake is NOT our lake it’s Clanna ponds - a short walk up the lane. (There are no photos of our lake on the website or any access available to our lake which is rented from us by a private fishing syndicate) There are lots of photos on the website of the local area including a shop a pub and various other things we don’t own. The land adjacent to the enclosed campsite is private property and clearly marked as private property. If you had asked I could have told you where to go 😁

Local attractions

Outdoorsy types will have plenty of options in the Forest of Dean. Offa’s Dyke Path (10 minutes’ drive) straddles the English-Welsh border: following the route down towards the Sedbury Cliffs near Chepstow makes for a particularly pleasant jaunt. The site is also 10 miles south of the popular Family Cycle Trail, where guests can make a whistle-stop tour of the surrounding countryside. The circular 11-mile route runs through the Cannop Valley, along the old tracks of the Severn and Wye railway (passing through abandoned stations) and passes the remains of former coal mines at Foxes Bridge and Lightmoor. Mallards Pike (20 minutes' drive), where there is a car park, is also home to a Go Ape high ropes course. If you want to experience greenery with a bit of a twist, head to Puzzlewood (15 minutes) for a maze (as the name suggests), plus farm animals, an adventure playground and an interactive treasure hunt for the kids. For a proper step back in time, Tintern Abbey (20 minutes' drive) is surely one of the most impressive ruins in Wales. Make a day of it by contrasting its elegant Gothic facade with the sturdy walls of Chepstow Castle (also 20 minutes), built in days of yore to defend the banks of the River Wye.
