Hurrah, a pub site, and what a nicely named – and nicely placed – one too. Picture this: Riverside Caravan Park at The George is a peaceful, popular and very friendly park set along the wildlife haven of Gloucestershire's River Cam, with its own old-style family inn serving up home-cooked local food and traditional ales and ciders at reasonable prices (it should also certainly be mentioned that The George has its own steakhouse section and regular steak nights). The park – and pub – is an easy five-minute drive from the M5, making it a peachy place to use as a base for exploring Gloucestershire or as a stopover on the way to or from Cornwall and the southwest, and close to countryside walks passing along the river to snap otters, kingfishers, swans and other wildfowl on the smartphone. There's easy access to the A38 to get to other Gloucestershire highlights, like 16 miles of coarse fishing on the Gloucester to Sharpness Canal within 10 minutes' drive and the Forest of Dean 50 minutes away. And it should certainly also be mentioned that The George has a large beer garden, with plenty of benches for riverside relaxing and looking for those otters and swans… The amenities are roomy and well-maintained and include a family-friendly shower block with easy access, a loo and a shower accessible to disabled guests, washing-up facilities in the main shower block, a washing machine and a children's playground.

Dogs

  • The park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Breed-specific legislation (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).
  • There is unfenced open water on site. There is a 1.9 metre height restriction barrier in place for security. Cars receive key cards for site access. Vehicles over 1.9 metres should contact the warden between 8:30am and 7pm to raise the barrier.

This well-kept campground has roomy, private sites, many with river views & picnic tables. Guests rave about the spotlessly clean, modern private washrooms. The nearby pub is a hit for its great food & friendly vibe. Staff are always described as welcoming & helpful. Handy location near the M5, perfect for stopovers & exploring local trails, many of which allow dogs.

Powered grass campsite (XL)

Liked Really good toilet and shower facilities. Pub on your doorstep that was large and served food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We enjoyed our stay but we wouldn't stay again.

Disliked I felt the pitches were too close to each other as well as directly opposite your pitch so privacy isn't great. Also, people walked through our pitch to get water as the water point was on our pitch. The busy main road could be heard at all times of the day.

Just to clarify other guests should not be walking onto other pitches, if this happens regularly the warden needs to be informed. The water taps on the XL pitches are for that pitch only, just no permanent hook up to water is allowed due to pressure for future guests.

Liked Nice green place, good pitches, outstanding sanitation facilities and friendly staff. The onsite pub is great and there are pleasant woodland/riverside walks straight from the site.

Liked Lovely little site, couldn’t fault it to be honest. If I did have to choose one thing it would be that they don’t accept arrivals after 7-8:30pm with high van due to a high barrier which has to be opened when coming and going

Liked Access to park for dog walk. Hedges round pitches. Convenient pub for food at reasonable prices
Location ideal as overnight stop. Shower block was good.

Disliked Near noisy road and railway. Rubbish signal here, and no WiFi

Use this place as a base to get to the best of Gloucestershire and its surrounds, whether you want countryside or city days in the likes of Bristol, Cheltenham and Bath. (It's a safe bet you'd like a day at Cheltenham Racecourse, 40 minutes' drive away, too.) WWT Slimbridge (10 minutes) gives juicy chances to see resident ducks, swans and thousands of migratory birds alongside stacks of events like otter feeds, guided walks and canoe safaris. Also recommended by the team are Gloucester Docks and the National Waterways Museum (25 minutes); Woodchester Mansion Trust (20 minutes), an odd and unfinished country house surrounded by National Trust parkland, and 11th-century Berkeley Castle (10 minutes), thought to be the place where poor old Edward II saw his last day.
