  • Quiet Gloucestershire farm site among 64 acres of orchards
  • A 15-minute drive to Gloucester; 20 minutes to Forest of Dean
  • On the banks of the River Severn, with riverside pub 10 minutes' walk
As locations for a Gloucestershire break go, this is a particularly fine one. Broadway Farm Camping is part of a quiet sheep farm on the banks of the River Severn, with 64 fabulous acres of ancient orchards full of mature apple, plum, cherry and pear trees. All of that makes this a pretty fabulous place to spend some time – and the owners Andrew and Debra agree, so they’re doing their best to preserve the natural environment, installing wildling projects and working to conserve biodiversity and wildlife habitats on site. They’ve also signed up to the Greener Camping Club, so you’ll need to be a member to stay here. A year-long membership is automatically included in the cost of your stay, so if you're already a member make sure to tick the relevant extra box for your discount. This is a lovely area for walking, and you’ll be welcome to start your explorations with a stroll around the farm’s grounds. Beyond that you can head out onto the Severn Way for riverside rambles long or short – either way, you’ll no doubt have earned a drink at the Severn Bore Inn, a 10-minute walk from the farm. Both the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley National Landscape are a short drive away too, for more walks among splendid scenery (and yes, your dog is welcome to join you for those walks and a stay here…). Facilities on the farm are simple but nicely done – you’ll have access to a fridge-freezer, a washing machine and dryer, a compost toilet and an amenities block with two toilets, two showers and three washing-up sinks. Shops are 15 minutes’ drive away in Cinderford.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Amazing natural campsite - a long field with tonnes of trees. Lovely big mowed pitches - plenty of space to spread out & felt nice and private between the pitches with the trees & long grass between each pitch. Toilets & showers were spotlessly clean. Compost loo in the field, and normal loos & showers in a block next to the main farmhouse.

We didn’t make it there, but apparently a great pub down the footpath through the campsite & along the river Severn. Lovely to find a more natural, less commercial feeling campsite, with a very helpful owner - we’ll be back!

Local attractions

A walk along the Severn Way is a must, of course – especially if you happen to be here around the time of the Severn Bore, an intriguing natural tidal surge that also attracts surfers and kayakers keen to try something a bit different. There are also loads of great walks and things to see over in the Wye Valley National Landscape – a few favourites are Clearwell Caves (half an hour), Puzzle Wood (half an hour) and Tintern Abbey (45 minutes). You may also like to try canoeing from Symonds Yat (35 minutes) or visiting the Forest of Dean (20 minutes) for bike rides, a Go Ape course and a colourful sculpture trail. Heading the other way, you could spend some time in Gloucester (15 minutes), visiting the cathedral and National Waterways Museum or joining spooky tours at Gloucester Prison Events. A little way outside the city, there are more attractions like the Jet Age Museum (20 minutes) and Painswick Rococo Garden (25 minutes).
