  • Dog-friendly wild camping site on the edge of the Forest of Dean
  • A five-minute drive to a cycling centre; 15 minutes to the Wye Valley
  • Bike or walk to caves, supermarkets, golf courses and restaurants
With this wild camping escape as your base, the Forest of Dean is right within your grasp – literally. The Field Campsite is in Broadwell on the western edge of the Forest of Dean, 35 minutes’ walk from Cannop, 45 minutes from the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail and 50 minutes from the Forest of Dean Cycle Centre if you fancy pedalling a bike way into oaks, beech, ash, birch and holly. The grass pitches at The Field Campsite are indeed scenic. The basic field is surrounded by other fields, and it’s often treated to sublime sunsets. So, take the 15-minute stroll into Coleford, where it’s possible to purchase local food and wine and bring it back in time for Mother Nature’s natural light show. The pop-up site has showers and toilets, as well as a washing-up station, ice pack freezing and drinking water. Barbecues and dogs are both welcome, and firepits can be hired on site (please buy all wood fuel from the site team). Cycle paths, stunning walks and sublime scenery are never hard to track down and handily, attractions including ancient woodlands, caves and ponds are all a short drive or cycle away. A few bits of housekeeping: please keep dogs on leads at all times and pick up after them. Use the bins provided for your rubbish, shut the gate behind you and please do not play music after 11pm.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Not too overcrowded despite being a sunny bank holiday. Very close to the forest as well as coleford (shops & takeaways) both walking distance. Clean toilets.

Disliked Only two flushing toilets which did sometimes have a short queue, but there were also two portaloos and it was a busy bank holiday.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The facilities were fantastic for this type of campsite. The toilets were clean and the shower had plenty of hot water, there were also fire pits and logs available to purchase. It was within walking distance of the town and the staff were friendly.

Disliked Loud music and people arguing and shouting at eachother into the early hours of the morning meant we didn't really sleep much. There isn't an enforced quiet time, so expect some noise.

From the manager: Hi
Thank you for the lovely review.
I’m sorry you had to encounter other people being disruptive and causing you guys stress, unfortunately this is something I can’t police once I’m gone to bed if I don’t know about it when it’s happening.
We actually do have a noise curfew at 10pm which is a pity some of our fellow campers don’t adhere to it .
My apologies.

Local attractions

What might you find in Puzzle Wood (35 minutes’ walk)? Iron ores and Roman coins are scattered around the 14-acre ancient woodlands, with a wizard challenge to get the kids on the lookout. Meanwhile, the Forest of Dean has walking, cycling and mountain biking trails, including a nine-mile loop or the more challenging Offa’s Dyke Path and the Wye Valley Walk. Even more challenging are the Welsh peaks within driving distance of the site. The Brecon Beacons’ tallest mountain, Pen y Fan (an hour and 15 minutes’ drive), has several big hikes and Sugar Loaf (45 minutes) is a big six-mile hike in the gorgeous Black Mountains. Perhaps you’ll want to climb to Symonds Yat Rock (10 minutes), where peregrine falcons and goshawks often gather. Back down on the ground – well, actually underground – pretend like you’re a freeminer in the caverns and underground museum in Clearwell Caves (45 minutes’ walk). Those who fancy spying for some more birds or taking yet more peaceful bike rides might want to visit Cannop Ponds (five minutes’ drive). As for those who are looking to add kayaking, paddleboarding and raft-building to their Forest of Dean resume, slide Mallards Pike (10 minutes) right onto that itinerary.
