General

  • Ensuite shepherd's huts on a quiet site in the Forest of Dean
  • Puzzlewood, Clearwell caves and canoeing within 10 minutes' drive
  • Barbecues and firepits provided; woodfired hot tub for hire

Psst… fancy fleeing away for a forest foray? Slope off quietly if you can – the whole point of Gloucestershire getaway Secret Escape To The Forest is to keep things as peaceful as possible.

The forest you’ll be secretly escaping to is the fab Forest of Dean, on the cusp of the border between England and Wales. It forms the stunning surrounds for this family-run site five minutes’ drive from Coleford and 10 minutes from Monmouth. Many a mile of track awaits for folk who fancy wandering in the woods (keep your eyes open for deer as you go…), and the River Wye’s a 10-minute drive away for riverside rambles and canoe trips.

Even closer than any of these is the little village of Staunton, 10 minutes’ walk away and home to a splendid country pub with a tasty food menu. If you’d rather stay squirrelled away serenely on site, you can cook meals at your shepherd hut’s little kitchen area or settle down outside, where each hut has a picnic table and barbecue or firepit for alfresco meals.

That firepit’s a handy thing to have around on chillier evenings, too, as is the woodburning stove inside the hut. And if you really want to be sure of keeping warm, have a chat with the folk on site to see if you can book a session in their woodfired hot tub (advance booking highly recommended).

Please note

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Bookings must not be for more than 14 consecutive nights.

Guests must bring their own duvets, pillows, sheets and towels when staying in rental accommodation. You will not be allowed to stay if you do not bring these items.

As the shepherd's huts have steps they may not be suitable for people with reduced mobility.

I really can't recommend staying at Secret Escape to the Forest highly enough!

I loved everything about it from the friendly welcome, the cleanliness, the setting, the facilities, the coziness, the hot tub and the local pub. My sister and I booked a hut each for a weekend, and we wished we had booked them for longer. There are just 3 huts at the site, perfectly placed in a very quiet field with easy access to the Forest for walks. Whilst it feels incredibly remote, you can also walk to the superb local pub in just 5 minutes if you want a change of scenery (the food in the pub is excellent, and they also do takeaway meals!) or you can venture a little further afield for more options.

The facilities in the huts are excellent - the shower is brilliant, the wood burner is cozy and really heats the hut up, and there is a hob with kitchen utensils. It felt incredibly clean and secure, and felt like extra measures had been taken to deal with Covid-19 making it feel very safe.

We had the most welcoming greeting from Isobel upon arrival, who was so lovely and showed us to our huts to make sure we had everything we needed before leaving us to enjoy our visit. The friendly owners were always easily contactable if we needed anything.

Whether you are looking to totally switch off, go on some energetic walks or just spend some time with people away from the hustle and bustle, this is the perfect place to visit!

We will definitely be back, and hope to bring more people with us to enjoy the experience next time :-)

How the huts were set back from one another so you could enjoy your own privacy. Loved how it was in the middle of a field nice and peaceful and the hot tub was relaxing.

Advice to take torches of some sort as the only lighting you have once it’s dark is from inside the hut.

The cabin was cosy, clean and so peaceful!

The cabins have their own secret entrance to the forest and we had such a lovely walk down to the river and along to Symonds Yat!

The fridge, although small, held plenty - four burgers, an 8 pack of sausages, a pack of chicken skewers, a pack of koftas, a pack of sliced cheese, 4 cans of beer and a carton of apple juice to give you a good idea!

Isobel was so lovely and her and her daughters are on hand if ever you need them! Be aware that they wait at the field for your arrival - so if you are going to be late send them a message to let them know!

    Disliked:

We were a little disappointed that there was no welcome pack given the lovely pictures we had seen when booking! However, we understand that this was probably because of the current situation, and we LOVED our stay nevertheless.

Some washing up liquid and a cloth/sponge would have also helped us clean the kitchenware and surfaces thoroughly before we left.

The firepit was great for a bonfire but I wouldn't BBQ food on it - we ended up buying a disposable BBQ instead.

Local attractions

You’ll want to start with a wander (or few) around the Forest of Dean... If standard woodland trails aren’t doing it for the kids, take them over to Puzzlewood (10 minutes’ drive) to meander along magic-themed paths in search of fairies, unicorns and dragons. And if that’s not their scene either, add a bit of adventure to the equation on the treetop rope courses at the Go Ape park (10 minutes), or sign up for raft building, climbing and other escapades in Coleford.

Caves, canoes and castles should certainly be on the schedule too – start by getting underground at Clearwell caves (10 minutes), then return to the surface for canoe trips from Monmouth (10 minutes) or Symonds Yat (15 minutes). If you pick the latter, you may end up paddling past Goodrich Castle; if not, it’s worth driving up there (15 minutes) to see the ruined Norman pile.

If you’ve got an eye for all things that move, take the trip to Coleford (five minutes) to visit the Great Western Railway Museum and ride on the Perrygrove Railway. Should you prefer to peek at pretty little things, make your way to the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo (15 minutes).

Must see

  • Caldicot Castle & Country Park (4.8 kilometers)
