  • Adults-only park a couple of minutes' drive from the M5
  • Use as an overnight stopover or as a base for Cheltenham or Gloucester
  • Landscaped with mature shrubs, hedges and trees
Apart from a possible pitch on a tower block in the middle of a city, Briarfields Touring Park might be the most ‘leave your car at home’ site we’ve seen yet. Ditch the diesel guzzler or leave the motorhome on site and hitch a ride on one of the regular buses that pass right outside, leading to days’ worth of days out at Cheltenham (two miles away), Gloucester (six miles), Oxford, the Forest of Dean and the Cotswolds. And if you’re getting around under your own steam, the friendly family team at Briarfields can pick you up from local public transport when you arrive. Even on your own feet you’ll reach most of what you need quickly from the park: a pub and a newsagent are within a few minutes’ walk; an Indian restaurant, KFC and supermarket less than 15 minutes – and a caravan sales and spares dealership is a mile and a half away, just in case. Although Briarfields is only a couple of minutes from the M5 (it’s often used by guests on their way north or south as an overnight stopover), it’s been rather cleverly designed so you can think you’re slap bang in the middle of the countryside: the landscaped and the accommodation areas are edged throughout with mature shrubs, hedges and trees. Amenities are equally well looked after: the centrally placed amenities block is cleaned twice a day and has free hot showers for ladies, gents and disabled guests. Swing into reception when you arrive at Briarfields for reams of info, leaflets and maps on the many (many) things to do a bus ride away: buses run every ten minutes during the day and every 20 minutes in the evening to both Cheltenham and Gloucester, and another service to Oxford will give explorers about six hours in the city before heading back to Cheltenham. Briarfields is open all year round and is dog-friendly.

Liked Staff were lovely and friendly. Site was well kept. Facilities were fab, clean and modern. Pitch was level and electric hook up was easy to access. Site was in a great location to explore the surrounding area.

Disliked Road noise but once you zoned it out it wasn’t a bother.

Camping pod (double)

Liked Really enjoyed our stay in the glamping pod. It had everything we needed such as plates, cutlery, a fridge, plug sockets, a bed and a little table. Simple but had all the essentials.

The site was quiet and well-kept, and the toilets were honestly much cleaner than I expected. Everything felt tidy and looked after.

Great little break overall. Would definitely come back.

Powered cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Excellent. The staff were very welcoming. Great showers, plenty of hot water. The toilet/shower block was kept very clean and tidy. J liked the music playing in the shower block. Easy access to Gloucester and Cheltenham. The pitches were level and a good size with beech hedging in between. Excellent wi-fi. Excellent information before arrival and on the day. Probably one of the best run sites we have been to. I only scored it 9 because the A40 was adjacent to the site, which made it very easy to access but noisy at night. This was helped by wearing ear-plugs at night. ASDA and a pub within walking distance (10 minutes away)

From the manager: Dear Julie,

Thank you so much for your lovely review! We’re absolutely delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us and found the site clean, welcoming, and well-equipped. It means a lot to the whole team to know that our efforts helped make your visit a positive one.

We’re especially glad you liked the music in the shower block we do try to add those little touches! And thank you for your understanding about the nearby road; we know it can be a bit of a trade-off with the easy access.

We really appreciate you taking the time to leave such thoughtful feedback, and we hope to welcome you back again soon.

Camping pod (double)

Liked Great access to road network, Michael was fantastic on reception and allowed us access early which helped no end 😃. The Buttercup pod we stayed in was compact very clean and bed very comfortable. Using shared washing facilities is always a small concern BUT the facilities at Briarfield were fantastic and a pleasure to use. There was also an added bonus for the dogs and that was Dorothy’s field which was a totally enclosed field for walking the dogs. We look forward to seeing you next year and hopefully I can meet Dorothy & Simon on our return.

From the manager: Dear Richard,

Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful review! We’re so pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay in the Buttercup and found it clean, comfortable, and well located. Michael will be absolutely delighted to hear your kind words.

It’s great to know the shared facilities exceeded your expectations and that Dorothy’s Field was a hit with the dogs it’s always lovely when our four-legged guests enjoy their stay too!

We’re really looking forward to welcoming you all back next year, and we very much hope you’ll get to meet Dorothy and Billy on your return.

FHU cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked First time staying at this site and it was easy access from the M5, which was perfect for us.
Easy check in and was allocated our pitch and was pitched on a service pitch near to the toilet blocks.
The site is very well kept, the signage around the site was good, and even the map given to us had all the information we needed and was very useful.
ASDA was a 15 minute walk away, which we did use as having a motorhome its not as easy jumping in a car.
Only stayed for two nights, so can't comment on the bus services etc but we would use if we had more time.
People mentioned about road noise, but to us it didn't bother us, but you do get the planes flying over as you are near the airfield, again not a problem for us.
Overall the site is perfect, clean and tidy and well managed, and we will be using this site again as its in a top 5 of the best ones we have stayed at.

From the manager: Dear David,

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a lovely and detailed review!

We’re thrilled to hear that your first visit to our site was a positive one, and that you found the location, check-in process, and pitch allocation so convenient. It’s great to know the site map and signage were helpful, we always aim to make things as straightforward as possible for our guests.

We're glad you found the site well-kept and accessible, and that the nearby amenities, like ASDA, came in handy during your stay.

Your kind words about the cleanliness and management of the park mean a lot to us, and being placed in your top 5 sites is truly an honour!

We’d love to welcome you back again soon, hopefully for a longer stay next time so you can explore even more of what the area has to offer.

Liked Efficient and welcoming reception from the team on site. Loads of info for visitors.

The system for our entry and exit was also very efficient (inc ANPR)

Well kept grounds. Nice sized pitches with services. The shower button needs frequent pressing, but there's plenty of warm water from these clean effective showers, in ample sized 'cubicles'.

In fact, everything about the site was clean and tidy.

Dog friendly, the site has a dedicated dog walking area (perfect spot to watch the sun set).

WiFi speed was better than at home.

Accessible: frequent bus service(s) right outside the campsite.

Whilst we didn’t take bikes, the area has a very good cycling network.

Disliked I don't like shower curtains. But they, too, were clean.

The site is off a busy road. (Can't be helped, and means buses are frequent/easily accessible. But worth noting)

From the manager: Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful review!

We’re delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us and appreciated the warm welcome from our team, the clean and well-kept facilities, and the convenient location. It's great to know the ANPR entry system and on-site information were helpful, and that the WiFi even outpaced your home connection, always a bonus!

We’re especially pleased that our dog walking area was a hit (it’s one of our favourite sunset spots too), and that you found the site accessible with good public transport links.

We appreciate your feedback about the showers and the curtains and we’ll certainly take that on board as we continue to improve the guest experience.

We hope to welcome you back again soon!

Local attractions

Well. Where do we start? At least a day in Cheltenham first, we think – more if you’re coming to have a flutter at the racecourse just four miles away or jazzing it up at one of the many festivals. Catch the bus early to take in as much as poss: a morning coveting the art, furniture, crafts and jewellery at Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum, many created by Cotswold craftspeople inspired by William Morris, should build up an appetite for lunch and an afternoon of shopping around The Brewery, Bath Road and in the well-lined High Street. Harry Potter fans and the history-inclined will likely want an hour or two at medieval Gloucester Cathedral, used in the first and second films (see if you recognise the Cloisters). Away from Hogwarts, the cathedral has an award-winning exhibition centre, exhibitions and guided tours, and regular events and concerts including The Three Choirs Festival, one of the oldest classical choral music festivals in the world. The Gloucester Docks and award-winning Waterways Museum is also a good afternoon out for heritage fans, while the more modern can find plenty to occupy them at the waterside retail park Gloucester Quays. Plunge into the countryside next for a couple of days in the Cotswolds, where you’ll find acres of things to do whatever your inclination such as punting around local villages like Chipping Camden and Bourton-on-the-Water, or visiting the many museums ranging from Roman to motoring times. Wildlife options abound too, particularly for birders, with the Cotswold Falconry Centre at the Batsford Arboretum, geese and swans at Slimbridge Wetland Centre, and Birdland Park and Gardens in Bourton-on-the-Water where twitchers can see rare birds from around the world, including England’s only group of king penguins. Finally, take a day or two in the ancient Forest of Dean (Harry Potter and co ended up here too), one of the oldest woodlands in the country, to go underground at the old mines of the Clearwell Caves, hire a bike to hit the forest tracks, or, more relaxingly, take the four and a half mile trip from Lydney to Parkend on the Dean Forest Railway.
