  • Rural and peaceful Peak District farm with animals including llamas
  • A five-minute drive to cycling on the Monsal Trail and 15 to Bakewell
  • Tideswell, Castleton, Bamford and Chatsworth all within 20 minutes
Who needs to organise a hol all the way over in South America when you can linger beside the llamas at Five Acres Farm Campsite in Derbyshire? This park full of furry, friendly animals may not be within spitting distance of treks to Macchu Picchu, but it does have Peak District paths for hikes and cycle rides on the Monsal Trail starting from a five-minute drive away. The views are also nothing short of lush: the site is surrounded by wide open fields, and walks can be had without needing to get in the car towards the nearest settlement of Wardlow and up to Hay Cop (20 minutes on foot) for a look over the local landscape. If you’d rather dig into dessert than dawdle, the tarts and puddings of countrywide renown are at Bakewell, the only market town in the Peak District and a 15-minute drive from the site. Not too stuffed to think about stocking up on supplies after sampling the wares? Food stores are here too and other urban areas worth a wander for chocolate-box houses and cutesy craft shops include Tideswell, Castleton, Bamford and Chatsworth, all within 20 minutes. Plenty other activities can be had in these towns too: Tideswell’s got the impressive St John the Baptist Church to have a gander at; Castleton’s known for its caverns where the famed Blue John stone is mined, and Bamford has three different dams to trek around. Chatsworth, meanwhile, is home to swanky stately mansion Chatsworth House – yep, that one mentioned in Pride and Prejudice and regularly voted Britain's top country house.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Everything! The owner was so lovely, she would drive round on her tractor with fire pits to rent (£17.50 and highly recommend!). Facilities were always clean and the campsite was very spacious. Absolutely loved it and will definitely be visiting again!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked clean facilities well maintained. field quite flat and lovely views across the valley. walking distance to pubs, few takeaways that deliver (didn't use). Good value. Owners come around everyday to check in, firepits available for hire.

Disliked very busy on a saturday night in school holidays as expected. little way away from any shops if low on supplies. limited service on o2.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We stayed at Five Acres Campsite in Wardlow on 26th July to kick off the summer holidays and had a brilliant time. I visited with my three children (ages 6 and 10), and it couldn’t have been a better spot for a family break.

The “pick your own pitch” setup was a lovely touch, giving us plenty of space and freedom to choose a spot that suited us. The site itself is very clean and well-maintained – toilets and showers were regularly cleaned, and the pot-washing area was spotless and really convenient. No matter where you pitch, all the facilities are just a short walk away, which is great when you’re with little ones.

The owners were fantastic – friendly and present without being intrusive. They popped round a few times each day to check everything was okay, and they’ve made it easy to get in touch with their mobile numbers posted around the site.

We loved the peaceful, relaxed atmosphere. Even though the site was full and there were lots of families, it stayed quiet and calm – no rowdiness at all. My kids made friends straight away and spent hours happily playing.

A bonus for the animal lovers: there are a few goats on-site, and the campsite is surrounded by fields full of sheep and cows – a lovely rural touch that added to the charm.

All in all, a fantastic family-friendly campsite we’d happily return to. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a spacious, peaceful spot with everything you need.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Easy to find, well signposted and warm welcome. Lovely views and pitch where you like with car next to tent. Showers clean with handy shelves and mirror, steps up to them. Plenty of toilets, never had to wait for any facilities even with the campsite busy. Found some good walks from the site through nature reserves and woods. Local pub welcome and traditional.

Disliked Main road nearby does create some background noise but nothing the owners can do about that!

Local attractions

If guests do decide to give pedal pushing on the 8.5-mile and traffic-free Monsal Trail a go, they can use it to reach Bakewell, stopping at Monsal Head on their merry way for views of the River Wye and the Headstone Viaduct. For leisurely walks with typically stunning Peak District views, try Mam Tor or the Ladybower Reservoir (both around 20 minutes’ drive away); hardier hikers can take on an expedition to Kinder Scout, 40 minutes' drive away, to scale the national park’s highest point. Or, if you’d rather do your sightseeing underground, boat trips through Speedwell Cavern are 20 minutes away...
