Hike, pint, hike again – and repeat. Make a beeline for Poynton Cross Campsite if that sounds like your dream holiday – or at least your dream weekend away (the site, in the middle of the Peak District, is open to guests only from Friday to Sunday). Life is simple at this peaceful no-frills spot on a farm off the B6049: there is a green field where you can set up your tent, spectacular views across the Derbyshire countryside and plenty of inquisitive farm animals to keep you company – that’s if you don’t have your own canine companion with you. (If you do come with your dog, please note that a daily charge applies.) In terms of amenities, things are fairly spartan: there is no hot water, for instance, though there is a portable toilet and a washing-up area (with cold water). What you do get here, though, is plenty of space to roam, excellent dog walks and loads of traditional pubs (including one a 10-minute walk away) serving home-cooked food. The village of Tideswell (five minutes’ drive), with a high street lined by pretty stone cottages, also has pubs and restaurants, plus a small supermarket. Among the most popular spots for hikes are the area around Castleton (15 minutes), which includes highlights such as the Peak Cavern and the ruins of Peveril Castle; and the Chee Dale Stepping Stones nature reserve (20 minutes), with a walk along the River Wye.

Liked Friendly service by James who came to great us a few minutes into us arriving and beginning to set up camp. Lovely views and setting for the site.

Good walking access to local pubs and within short drives to local towns and villages.

Disliked Could do with being better signposted. Even when using the given postcode, the site does require a short drive down a bridal way which the sat nav (at least in my car) didn’t account for.

Liked What a lovely site. Lots of room and well maintained and flat. So close to many attractions in the Peak District.
We went to Castleton and walked up MamTor. In the evening we walked up to The Barrel for dinner which was stunning

Fantastic campsite. Quiet with fantastic views.
The field is well maintained and perfect for camping with no caravans which is a bonus.
So close to lots of attractions.
Very friendly farmer who runs the site. Thank you .

Local attractions

The village of Eyam (10 minutes’ drive) is famed for its forward-thinking measures to prevent the spread of the plague in 1666, including quarantine and social isolation. The Eyam Museum displays archival documents dating back to this 17th-century episode, as well as mining artefacts and works by local artists. Crossed by the River Wye, Buxton (25 minutes) illustrates its history as a spa town in the Visitor Centre & The Buxton Crescent Experience, a handsome 18th-century Palladian-inspired building. Nearby are the Buxton Opera House and the Pavilion Gardens, with a miniature train and a bandstand. The halls of Chatsworth House (25 minutes) are decorated with colourful frescoes, rich wood panelling, gilded balconies and marble floors, creating a gorgeously opulent effect. The gardens are pretty spectacular, too, with water features and statuary. And the good news is that the grounds are largely dog-friendly, so your canine buddy can come along, too.
