The Devonshire Arms: Just behind the village inn

General

  • Simple Peak District pitches behind a 16th-century village pub
  • A 10-minute drive to Castleton's caves and 15 minutes to Buxton
  • Pub open Thursday to Sunday for real ales and home-cooked food

Peak District hike followed by a well-earned pint? Splendid. All of this followed by a short toddle of a couple of minutes to your bed? Even more splendid. Such is the situation at The Devonshire Arms, where pitches have been set up just behind the 16th-century village inn in Peak Forest.

Footpaths lead directly from this site to the Pennine Bridleway for walks and bike rides, with the likes of Mam Tor, Speedwell Cavern and Blue John Cavern all within striking distance. There’s bike hire nearby too if you’re not able to bring your own wheels along.

This is a handy spot from which to explore Derbyshire by car too – it’s just off the A623 so there’s speedy enough access to places like Buxton (15 minutes’ drive) and Bakewell (20 minutes), to places like Chatsworth House or to the more remote corners of the Peak District National Park.

And at the end of the day? It’s back to the pub, where freshly cooked meals can be washed down with well-kept real ales in the cosy bar or out in the beer garden before you stroll back to your pitch. The pub’s dog friendly and open from Thursday to Sunday; on other days, maybe journey into Chapel-en-le-Frith (10 minutes’ drive) for supermarket supplies or takeaways.

This is a small site with simple facilities, but guests can use the free wifi, and the toilets and wash basins in the pub are accessible 24 hours a day.

Please note

This park has no on-site shower facilities.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the park are unlit.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Very friendly and welcoming staff they even gave us a key to the static caravan to use toilet as no one was staying in it, the ground was soft and flat which is perfect for camping. It is very central for visiting towns such as Edale and Castleton and perfect for hikers there are even walks from the front door. The pub its behind is amazing its cosy and comfortable and the staff are friendly and acomodating even being helpful with my reactive dog, the food is home cooked and delicious and service was fast and extremely friendly. We are staying here again for a few days of relaxation after we get married in March, we can't wait.

    Disliked:

The only issue was busy road but hot used to it and slept well, helped by a full stomach and having had a couple of drinks.

A very friendly pub with the pitch situated just behind. great location to walk down towards Chee Dale and Wye Dale and situated close to Buxton. the pub leave the toilets open 24hr for the campers and there is a static caravan, and if empty, has a shower that can be used, also a microwave. I ate in the pub each night which provided great meal choices with a lot of vegan and vegetarian options. Friendly staff who were very welcoming, and warm.

    Disliked:

Caravan toilet facilities not cleaned during stay.
Horrendous traffic noise, worst sleep I've had.
New pitches set up by neighbours allowing arrivals very late and using the wall to access the pub and facilities.
Pub prices much higher than Castleton which has more appeal.
Pub Menu aimed mostly at vegans.
Water supply outside a rented cottage window which was uncomfortable.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to review our small friendly site I am really sorry you didn’t enjoy your stay with us . The caravan is used as an added extra and not advertised as a facility and shouldn’t be an expectation we thought it was just a nice thing to do to open it up to guests when available as it’s a couple of paces from the pitch and we also have the pub toilets to accommodate our small site of only 3 pitches.
The vegan part of the menu is admittedly large but our traditional pub menu is much larger and is shown as such on our website thedevarms.com.
I’m surprised you would prefer Castleton if noise is an issue as Castleton is well known as horrendously busy and noisy and a little unfair to judge our sleepy village with a major tourist attaction
It’s disappointing that in our quest for survival our helpfulness and friendliness to our guests and others is seen as a criticism

Local attractions

Keen to give your boots or bike a workout? You’ve come to the right spot – from the pub it’s an easy jaunt to Mam Tor (10 minutes’ drive), the Monsal Trail (15 minutes) or Stanage Edge (25 minutes). You might like to stop in for a dip at the open-air pool in Hathersage (20 minutes) at the end too.

There are many fine views to see around here – and some equally great sights to be seen below ground if you head to Poole’s Cavern & Buxton Country Park (15 minutes) or up to Castleton (10 minutes) to visit Speedwell Cavern and Blue John Cavern. Back up on the surface, get a hit of history at Eyam (10 minutes), the village that sealed itself off from the world during the Bubonic Plague of 1665.

Away from all the rural attractions, take some town time at the opera house, gallery and museum in Buxton (15 minutes) or fuelling up at the pudding shops of Bakewell (20 minutes). The excellent Chatsworth House (25 minutes) should be on the schedule too, for the farm shop and playground as well as the house and gardens.
