  • Peaceful and dog-friendly pop-up site in the eastern moors
  • A 15-minute drive to Bakewell and Chatsworth House; walks nearby
  • Space for barbecues on site; five minutes’ drive to restaurants
Introducing the eastern moors of the Peak District: crags, valleys, characterful towns and villages, woods and last but not least, the dog-friendly Hay Field Camping. This peaceful back to basics pop-up site is in an excellently scenic spot in the east part of ‘the Peaks’, as locals call the national park – and your dog can bag a spot too. If, upon arrival, you’re in the mood for an immediate outdoor expedition, hiking, running or biking trails start pretty much straight outside of the site. Shillito Wood is five minutes’ walk away, and has wildlife like woodpeckers and blue tits and heaps of space for dogs to stretch their paws. Curbar Edge, a gritstone escarpment which attracts climbers as well as hikers, is also within walking distance of the site. It's peaceful out on the moors, of course, and that theme very much carries over to Hay Field Camping. The site is simple but spacious and surrounded by views of the moors. The only facilities are portable toilets; there’s no running water or showers. All the site asks is that you take all waste home with you. And the trade-off? Heaps of space for barbecues and for dogs and kids to have a bit of a run around. Stomach rumbles are easily tended to here too, even if you’re not yet ready to take charge of the grill. Bistros and restaurants can be tracked down in Holmesfield, five minutes’ drive away, or in Barlow, 10 minutes’ drive away. For dessert, perhaps tuck into Bakewell tarts freshly picked up from historic Bakewell, 20 minutes’ drive away?

Local attractions

The Peaks is no stranger to a historic house or estate, and two very grand places are close to Hay Field Camping. Chatsworth House (15 minutes’ drive) will certainly make for a pretty picnic spot, with its farmyard, museum and scenic riverside. Longshaw Estate (10 minutes) is another potential, with an ancient woodland, moors and parkland. A village, next? Hassop (10 minutes) is based on the Monsal Trail, so take charge of an electric or traditional bike and whizz through old railway tunnels. Heathersage (20 minutes), which has links to Jane Eyre and other books, has an outdoor swimming pool and easy access to Stanage Edge’s rock climbing spots. Castleton (half an hour) in the Hope Valley has a number of show caves and walks in all directions through hillsides, to Peveril Castle or to Mam Tor. The towns are just as splendid. Bakewell (15 minutes) on the river Wye is the national park’s biggest town, and has a gorgeous medieval bridge and popular bakeries selling Bakewell tarts.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: The views

Disliked: Everything else.! This was not a campsite…… it’s a field with a dirty portaloo. No water or bins. How you can charge £40 for this is unbelievable. Stayed in much better campsites for less.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Lovely views and huge nearly empty space

Disliked: Seemed incredibly overpriced for what was a single portaloo in an otherwise empty field- no bins or water or elsan etc. there wasn’t actually even a sign on the gate, we assumed we were in the right place according to the postcode.
