  • Peaceful family-friendly Peak District site next door to a farm
  • A 15-minute drive from Castleton and 20 minutes from Bakewell
  • Seating area with a woodburning stove; direct access to scenic walks
Welcome to the Peak District: pretty hikes, miles of countryside, historic properties and country lanes. Down one of those country lanes is Sweet Knoll Camping, a rather lovely (and very much peaceful) place to stay next door to a pretty Peak District farm. Spectacular views? You bet. This central part of the Peak District is particularly gorgeous, and the pitches have views of sloping green fields. A launch pad for lovely hikes? Indeed. There are a variety of walks guests can take directly from the site. If that’s not satisfying enough already, the local village pub (including a shop) is only a 15-minute walk away and can be added as a pitstop for pints or local grub. The village also has a kids' playground. The family-run site has a Belfast sink where guests can set about washing up their dishes. In the same washing-up area, there’s seating next to a woodburning stove. There are also a couple of toilets and showers on site. Barbecues are permitted at Sweet Knoll Camping should guests fancy grilling their own dinner rather than tracking down food in the local towns or villages, like Bakewell (20 minutes’ drive) and Castleton (15 minutes). The closest shops are a 10-minute drive away, or there’s a farm shop a five-minute drive away.

What customers say

Amazing Peak District views & serene vibes. Guests rave about the welcoming owner, Stephanie, and spotless facilities, especially the showers. Perfect for walks to Castleton & Mam Tor. Some note a need for more toilets during peak times & occasional camper noise.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked really emptied out on Sunday, and we had almost the whole site to ourselves which was nice. beautiful views and close by to toll bar fish and chips which was excellent!

Disliked unfortunately due to storm floris our tent was ripped to pieces when we came back from a day out - no fault of the campsites though! we packed up sharpish and headed for home a day early.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Booked for 2 nights, absolutely lovely spot, plenty of room for camping. Toilet blocks and showers very clean. The owner was very friendly and prided her business by looking after everything, from cleaning the toilets, replenishing toilet roll and checking everything was ok always was onsite for a chat, just a lovely person. I really enjoyed my stay with my partner and Jack russell. I will definitely returning.

Disliked Nothing at all

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked The views are nice and location is good.

Disliked Over crammed field.
No set boundaries for the pitch, which means its a free for all and very limited space.
One pitch had 9 tents and 4 cars!
People smoking weed in the evening.
Not enough facilities for the amount of people.
Camping rules are not followed, with dogs off the lead.
Has the potential to be a nice campsite, but due to the above, we wouldn't return.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Good location, nice views. Despite huge amount of people using facilities the owner tried to keep on top of restocking.

Disliked As many people as possible were crammed in to the fields leaving no open space between pitches. Too many people let in for the facilities on site. Particularly problematic on night two when a third field was opened up.

Local attractions

Castleton (15 minutes’ drive) village is a very cute local spot. Its show caverns (including Peak Cavern, Treak Cliff Cavern and Blue John Cavern) have contributed to its fame, but the stone houses and views of Hope Valley and the High Peak are also ravishing. A walk up Mam Tor (15 minutes) is likely to please outdoorsy types. The five-mile route passes through heather moors on Kinder Scout and a reservoir before reaching the 517-metre hilltop in the High Peak. After your climb, you might decide that the Bakewell tarts and puddings of Bakewell (20 minutes) are the next natural course of action. The market town also has access to the Monsal Trail, a cycling route through old railway tunnels. Tuck into your sweet treats on the riverfront, a popular spot with other consumers of the famous tarts. There are some splendid walks around Chatsworth House (half an hour) should you crave more outdoorsy days out. Royal family members live in the house, so interested folks can book a tour to see some of the historic rooms (and the surrounding 105-acre garden and farmyard if they so wish).
