  • Peaceful Peak District pop-up site 20 minutes’ drive from Buxton
  • The Monsal Trail 10 minutes’ drive and Chatsworth House 25 minutes
  • Off-grid camping with stunning views; pubs and shop five minutes’ walk
There’s little more relaxing than being out hiking or cycling in the Peak District National Park and winding up your day in the comfort of a pub five minutes’ walk from your campsite. And that’s exactly what you can do when you book in at Needams Camping, a back-to-basics pop-up site sitting above the village of Litton, 20 minutes’ drive from Buxton in Derbyshire. The pitches are in a large field (sloping in places) with fantastic views over the village and the surrounding hills and dales. Mains water is available and there are portable loos on the edge of the meadow, but apart from that, you’re on your own – meaning there are no showers and the whole site is off-grid (don’t forget the torches). There are numerous walks, bike rides and testing hikes in the national park; the closest to Needams Camping is The Monsal Trail (10 minutes’ drive), open for use by walkers and cyclists. If you don’t fancy eating in the pub of an evening, barbecues are allowed on site and you can pick up all you need for a decent grill-up from the village shop.

Local attractions

Done The Monsal Trail (10 minutes’ drive) and looking for a few days of relaxation? Take time out amid the Georgian architecture of Buxton (20 minutes), head for Bakewell (15 minutes) on the River Wye to taste some of its legendary puddings, or have a nose around photogenic Tideswell (five minutes) – be sure to have a look in the village’s vast 14th-century church, nicknamed the ‘Cathedral of the Peak’. Chatsworth House (25 minutes) is one of the region’s biggest attractions, with priceless decorative arts in the house, Capability Brown-designed parkland; it also has workshops, a petting farm and playgrounds for children. Thornbridge Estate (15 minutes) makes a fun day out for younger kids; they can fish plastic ducks out of a fountain, encounter fairytale figures in the woods and follow nature trails. If prehistory is your thing, head to Arbor Low Stone Circle and Gib Hill Barrow (25 minutes), a collapsed neolithic stone circle and Bronze Age burial mound on high moorland. There are more ancient relics at Nine Ladies Stone Circle (half an hour), reached by a ramble across Stanton Moor.
