  • A small peaceful site in the heart of the Peak District
  • Chatsworth House 20 minutes’ drive; Buxton 25 minutes
  • Monsal Trail access at the bottom of the hill; village pub a mile away
Holiday-makers keen to explore the Peak District National Park and happy to forgo a few conveniences might want to book a spot at Mayfields Farm. This pop-up site on a peaceful, remote farm close to the Derbyshire villages of Litton (about a mile away) and Tideswell (five minutes’ drive) is a no-frills place: there is only a portable toilet here, and a connection to mains water. To balance that simple set-up, however… the views of the Derbyshire Dales and the Wye Valley from the motorhome pitches are pretty spectacular. Chances are that merely looking at those views will make you want to lace up your boots (or check the pressure in your bike tyres…). How convenient, then, that the Monsal Trail can be accessed within minutes, since it runs just at the bottom of the hill from the site. You might end up sharing this nine-mile long track with runners and horse riders, but there is no motorised traffic, which makes visiting Monsalhead Viaduct, Headstone Tunnel and other highlights along this route very pleasant indeed. Other walks include the (fairly challenging) three-mile circular route up Mam Tor (20 minutes), with views all the way to the Derwent Moors, and a climb up Jacob’s Ladder (40 minutes), literally a series of steps carved into the hillside. After all that activity, you might well be in need of a pint and a warming meal, both of which are served in Litton’s traditional pub, with a stone and wood interior and a jolly woodburner.

What customers say

Offers a simple, spacious escape with great valley views. Praised for its peace, clean portaloos, and picnic spots. Ideal for walks; Red Lion pub is a short hike. Basic but authentic, friendly owner, and good value. Many plan to revisit.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked As is says on the tin, large open field with taps, portaloos and picnic benches scattered around. Plenty of space to park and wonderful views through the valley. Plenty of walks around, and 20 minutes walk into Litton which has a pun (highly recommend) and small shop.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Back to basics and exactly what I needed as I couldn't go to Scotland to wild camp this year. Had almost isolation with only one or two campers per night I stayed. Contact with site was easy (good mobile connection on site). Also village had excellent food relatively quick walk away.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked Really nice site with beautiful surroundings. Loved the animals in adjacent fields and tractors going about their daily business - authentic countryside feel. Can pitch anywhere, which was great. Its a big field, probably would fit more, but kept to a miminum to avoid over crowding, which I keep hearing a lot about with other sites. 20 minute walk into Litton, then another 20 minutes walk from Litton into Tideswell - which is well worth a visit! Stunning campsite overall, with clean toilets and cold water taps. Great morning views, will definitely return!

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked Great views all around the site. Close to the village and the local pub - highly recommended. Short drive to nice walks and even walking distance for hiking.
It was very quiet on the campsite in spite of being the bank holiday weekend. There were a couple of toilets - festival type ones, but kept clean and there was a tap with cold water outside.

A basic but adequate choice. Would come back if in the area.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Quiet on site, despite being a beautiful bank holiday weekend. Other sites were swamped. While toilets were portaloos, they were very clean and well stocked with toilet roll.

Views from site are excellent, and good walks from the site. Red Lion at Litton is an excellent pub and only a 20min walk. Anglers at Millers Dale about 2 miles away.

Disliked Facilities were basic (2 portaloos and a tap) and the site is on a fair slope in places. Other sites are better equipped and cheaper.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked This was a lovely little place, beautiful views from the camp and really good place to watch the sunset. Cows in fields near by (including highland cows) quite fun to watch, farmer is great happy to help you move benches around if you need one close to your camp. I would recommend doing the 20 minute walk to the Red Lion pub, really nice place, little garden with chairs and a little post office/shop just across the road. You are also able to pitch up where you feel free. Easy to pitch up together if travelling with friends or family.

Disliked I wouldn’t really say it’s a dislike, but the field is a hill so it’s a bit of a walk to and from the toilets. This is also because we choose to pitch up at the top of the hill. Space to park close to the toilets if wanted.

Local attractions

An opulent mansion completed in the early 18th century, Chatsworth House (20 minutes’ drive) has 25 lavish rooms, including the Painted Hall, with a chequerboard floor and a gilded gallery. The splendid gardens feature waterworks and a maze. For the kids there’s a petting farmyard, from where a secret tunnel leads to a woodland play area. In the spa town of Buxton (25 minutes), the River Wye runs through the Victorian-era Pavilion Gardens, a 23-acre landscaped area with a playground, a miniature train and a boating lake. You might want to check out the Buxton Opera House, where the programme ranges from live music and talks, to musicals and films. Meerkats and wallabies are among the animals calling Matlock Farm Park (35 minutes) home, but there are also alpacas (which you can take for a trek), Highland cattle and donkeys, plus a reptile den where you can get up close and personal with assorted slithering creatures.
