  • Family-run campsite on a dairy farm in the Peak District National Park
  • Access to Lathkill Dale directly from the site
  • Small on-site shop; firepits for hire; animals on site
When you’re keen to get out exploring the Derbyshire Dales, you can’t get much closer to them than Haddon Grove Farm Campsite. This welcoming, family-run caravan and camping site has direct access to spectacular Lathkill Dale from the pitches. Located on a dog-friendly working dairy farm – you are welcome to meet the cows, horses and chickens – with views to the hills and dales of the Peak District National Park, the site was established in the early 1950s and has gone from strength to strength ever since. There are separate fields for family use – with play areas and rope swings – and others for group bookings, ensuring nobody gets disturbed on site. Facilities run to a shower block and wash room, and as barbecues are allowed by the pitches in the camping fields (source any foodie bits in the pretty town of Bakewell, 10 minutes’ drive), firepits can be hired on site. Logs are sold from the small on-site shop, which – more importantly for the kids – also stocks tasty ice cream from a local farm. If you're after something more substantial, head to Annie’s Kitchen (a food van that visits on some weekends) for breakfast sandwiches or evening food and get your mitts on the woodfired pizzas sold most weekends. Drinks are also sold at the bar (open on some weekends).

Powered gravel and cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked I want to try keep positive. This is a lovely site its location is gorgeous and its an amazing location for walks, cycling and trips out to Bakewell and Buxton. We visited Easter weekend for a busy site it was very quiet. We stay in a caravan but couldn't help notice because of the large open spaces there was plenty room to sprawl out. There is also the added bonus of onsite food vans. We didn't use them as they did seem quite expensive. There is great potential for this site!

Disliked On a more negative the facilities on this site are poor for its size they don't seem to handle the number of people on the site for a busy weekend. The electric hookups are 6amp which is not a lot! We found we tripped the power numerous times we seem to be unable to power more than one high power item at a time. For example if you have the heating on you can't use a kettle! Next the water pressure was shocking! It seem to take an age to fill an aqua roll and this seem to have a negative impact on the showers. On one morning there was no hot water at all in the showers. Lastly when we went to use the Chemical point it was clearly full and over flowing. I appreciate this is a working farm however some of the hardstands sit next to a cow shed. They mucked the shed out late at night and the smell behind the shed could become pungent! Our other party had a hard stand above the shed and it was far less noticeable. So i recommend avoiding pitching behind the shed!

From the manager: Thanks very much for your review and for staying with us over the Easter weekend — we’re really pleased to hear you enjoyed the setting, space, and peaceful atmosphere, even during a busy period. It’s great to know the location and access to walks around Bakewell and Buxton made your stay a good one
We do really appreciate your feedback on the facilities, especially over a peak weekend when the site is at its busiest. We’re currently in the middle of a major upgrade, including a brand-new electric supply which will be fully operational within the next month. This will significantly improve the reliability and capacity of our hookups across the site.

We’re also relocating and improving parts of the site layout, including moving some areas further away from the farm buildings to enhance the overall guest experience.

In the meantime, our hookups are 6 amp, which are designed for lighter use, and we recommend using appliances one at a time to avoid tripping — we’ll make sure this is clearer for guests before arrival.

Regarding the hot water, we did experience a temporary boiler fault on the Sunday morning which caused a short interruption. This was reset within around 30 minutes and service was restored quickly, but we appreciate this would have been frustrating at the time and we’re keeping a close eye on the system.

We’re also sorry to hear the water pressure didn’t meet your expectations. Feedback from many guests has been very positive, but we are already in the process of upgrading to a new pumped system ahead of the May bank holiday, which will ensure consistently strong pressure across the site going forward.

The chemical disposal point is checked regularly, but we’ll increase monitoring during busy periods to ensure it remains in good order.

As a working farm, there are times when essential jobs like mucking out need to be carried out, but we do try to be mindful of timings and guest experience wherever possible.

Thanks again for your comments — it’s really helpful feedback as we continue to improve, and we do hope to welcome you back in the future.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Its a nice site with views ect, however we wouldn’t stop again but it seemed a great place for walkers to explore the area.

Disliked Communicate wasn’t very good and nothing for kids to do, however that’s my fault for not looking into the site more. Also the men’s toilets were grim but think that’s more of the holiday makers being disrespectful for other people using them 😫

Local attractions

Scenic walks are to be had along the namesake river in Lathkill Dale, where you can stride out towards Lathkill Head Cave (an hour and 20 minutes’ walk) or marvel at the clear springs at The Blue Waters near the peaceful village of Over Haddon (35 minutes). For a slightly longer ramble, Arbor Low Stone Circle and Gib Hill Barrow (90 minutes) reward with prehistoric monuments and ancient burial mounds. Combine your stroll around the verdant grounds at Chatsworth House with a guided tour of the mansion’s ornate rooms packed with priceless antiques, or take in the Elizabethan Walled Gardens at Haddon Hall (both 20 minutes’ drive) after you’ve admired the tapestry collection and medieval chapel. For an insight into Peak District heritage, visit the bijou Eyam Museum (also 20 minutes) in the famed ‘plague village’ to learn the story of the Bubonic Plague of 1346–52, or have a wander around the deserted remains of Magpie Mine (five minutes’ drive), which was the last working lead mine in Derbyshire and closed in 1958.
