Peaceful location in beautiful countryside.

June 2026

Liked Very spacious pitch with electric hook up. Basic set up - just how we like it. Toilets and shower were very clean, with good supply of toilet paper and hand soap. Wash up area good but not covered. Dark site except for toilet block. Great to see the goats and sheep. Short walk to a well stocked village shop and to local pub. Pub food excellent, with more friendly goats. Gemma was fantastic; great pre-visit communications, lovely to meet/chat face-to-face and was easy to extend stay by 1 night. Bobby, the cat, was an added bonus. Planning another visit.

Disliked Minor points, but hot water at wash basin would be nice, especially on colder days. Recycling bins.

Mar 2026

Liked We stayed 5 nights at the site in early March. Pitches were large, fairly level, stoned, with water and electric nearby. Good distance between each pitch, with maintained grass. Shower/toilet were individual, spacious and well heated. Wash-up area outside but covered. Great cafe next door, good prices, good cooked breakfast and lots of cake. Number 40 bus runs 1/hr weekdays but last bus back is 1910hrs. However, taxis available c. £12. Lovely to listen to the bird song. Little traffic noise with pop top up. No one on site but telephone number if service required. Pitches not pre-allocated. Would definitely recommend.

Disliked Most of the pitches were taken up by longstay/permanent caravans, which made it feel empty/quiet.This obviously varies depending on the weather/season. Toilet block at one end of long site and therefore long walk if your pitch was at far end of site. All minor points compared to all the positive points, so wouldn't put me off returning.

Excellent campsite with friendly people.!

Aug 2024

Liked Excellent communication and very well organised and friendly on arrival. Well signposted on the approach roads. Spacious pitch and lots of room available, even though it was on the August Bank Holiday. Toilets were clean, with hot water at wash basins with good lighting. Didn't try the showers but they looked popular. There was a food van and entertainment on but we didn't partake and therefore can't comment, but great to have the options. Views were exceptional, when no clouds. No WiFi, but very good 4G for those that might want/need it.

Disliked The approach roads were very narrow with limited passing places, especially from the south side. Definitely would be stressful with a larger vehicle and/or towing a caravan. There were often queues at the washing up stations and at the limited number of toilets and on our second day some had ran out of toilet paper.

Price high for convenience of bar but not quality of site.

Aug 2024

Liked Convenient location. Spacious pitch and fairly level. Portaloo clean with plenty of loo paper. Didn't try the shower, so can't comment on water temperature or power, but very basic set up. Fire pit available to use. Brewery tap room bar which sold their own beer & larger, and local cider. Mexican food van available on Friday night, good quality but not cheap. Order early as they started to run out of stuff. Fish & chips Saturday night but didn't try. All very nice to have but price high because of it. Wouldn't recommend unless you are particularly looking for a site with bar and loud music on tap.

Disliked Price far too expensive for what was available. Portaloo only had hand sanitizer to wash your hands. Washing up sink was full of leaves and no plug. Poor communication, no confirmation email prior to arrival, no additional information about 'help yourself, select your own pitch, no one to check in with'. On arrival, no additional information, so called mobile listed to politely enquire and received a rather curt response along the lines of 'we are a working fruit farm and everyone has been up since 6am, so no one is available to help at 7pm'. Loud music from bar tent until midnight on Saturday night. Bar car park very busy and very close to camping area. All pitches adjacent to road, which was fairly quite.

From the manager: Hi Ruth, Thanks for your feedback. We are still working on improving the campsites facilities as we are just a pop up campsite at the moment. We have tried to be open and honest about the basic facilities but appreciate your comments. Upon booking an email is sent automatically (this email is where you would have found my telephone number) with site info and the fact there is no reception etc but i understand your comments and will work harder on providing future campers with more information for their stay. It certainly wasn't my intention to come across as curt. Thanks Tom

Aug 2023

Liked Toilet/shower block was immaculate and new. So much space! Welcomed on arrival by owner with site information and access codes. Footpath access straight from farm great. Two pubs in walking distance but only managed to try out the one in Bodiam; excellent food.

Disliked Minor complaint, flattest part of site is next to road but the road was fairly quiet. But the space available out weighted the minimal noise.

Great winter site for Jurassic Coast and Weymouth adventures.

Feb 2023

Liked Great location for accessing the countryside and Weymouth. Hardstanding pitches with electric all year round. Facilities exceptionally high standards and clean. Secure access to site. Very quiet location at this time of year. Staff present during the day and helpful. Short walk to small café and pub, both provided very good food and service. Roaring open fires in pub a bonus.

Disliked Dog owners that don't clean up after their pets, but no complaints to staff/site. Once reported to staff, they were instantly on it and all cleaned up.

From the manager: Thank you for the very kind review and really happy that you liked the location, site, facilities and local village cafe and pub. Apologies about some dog owners - we do check the pitches and surrounding areas each day. See you the next time you visit Portesham.
