- Peaceful rural park seven miles from Preston, Idaho
- Close to hiking, biking and horse riding in Cache National Forest
- Fishing and tubing on the Cub River right from the park
Here's a handsome spot for outdoor adventures in Idaho: Cub River Guest Ranch is a peaceful family-owned park in the Cub River Canyon, about 15 minutes' drive from the town of Preston. The Cub River runs through this rural property, so guests can bring their ‘toys’ along and ride along the river directly from the park.
Got a thirst for aquatic activities? The local lakes, rivers and reservoirs have plenty to offer in terms of fishing, boating, jetskiing and tubing (tubing in the Oneida Narrows is often a highlight for many guests). If you're hankering after some off-road escapades too, there are many miles of groomed trails in the Cache National Forest, a quarter of a mile away, with options for ATVs, bikes, hikers, horse riders, snowmobilers and snowshoe outings.
After your outdoor adventures, there’s plenty of space to relax back at the park – it’s in the historic ‘watercress springs’ area, on the banks of the Cub River and right next to Deer Cliff mountain, so the views are pretty spectacular. That’s true by night too, as you’ll usually find clear starlit skies overhead here.
Facilities at the property include spaces for volleyball and tetherball (surely a must while in Napoleon Dynamite country…), a horseshoe pit and a water play area. The Deer Cliff Inn restaurant next door serves a wide range of hot evening meals in the summer months; there are more places to eat, plus shops and supermarkets, in Preston.

Local attractions
This is a region of mountains, lakes and rivers, straddling the states of Idaho and Utah, including the Bear River Heritage Area, and encompassing grand scenery, Native American and Mormon history and a dazzling array of wildlife.
Glendale Reservoir, 20 minutes' drive away, makes a good introduction to the area, for bass fishing in peaceful surrounds as well as walking trails through the wilderness. For bigger hikes around the Bannock Mountain Range, trails start from Davis Basin, about an hour's drive from the Cub River Guest Ranch.
It's around an hour and 30 minutes' drive to the vast open spaces and wildlife spotting of Bear Lake State Park, and the same to walk or drive through the rich prairies of the Curlew National Grasslands, dotted with old homesteads and a haven for birds.
To discover more of the human history behind this handsome region, it's a 40-minute drive to the Daughters of Utah Pioneers Museum in Logan, 50 minutes to the American West Heritage Centre in Wellsville, and an hour and 30 minutes to Fort Hall for the Shoshone Bannock Tribal Museum.
To soothe tired limbs after all those trails and tours, you could pick up a picnic at the Portneuf Valley Farmers' Market in Pocatello (an hour and a half), then head for the hot pools, waterpark attractions and walks of Lava Hot Springs (one hour, 10 minutes).
