- Off-grid accommodation at a secluded campground with animal encounters
- A 20-minute drive to Martinsville and the Mountain Laurel Trails
- Llama walks and goat feeding, ponds and riverside walks all on site
Are you ready for an interactive animal adventure? null Acres Ranch is a secluded property in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, on 61 acres home to more than 40 different species of animals – both domestic and exotic.
Guests at this wonderfully kid-friendly base – with riverside walks and themed areas in the woodland – have options to “just camp” or to get involved in feeding and watering the animals, grooming them or walking with llamas (an additional cost for that adventure).
Animals owned by the ranch are used in the owners’ non-profit educational programs designed for local youth and a day-support programme for adults with disabilities.
Guests choosing an interactive experience can learn about native or exotic animal species, meet a camel, give a milk bottle to a wallaby or handle baby goats.
Camp guests bring their own accommodation and there is parking space available on a gravel area, cement hardstanding or field, depending on the weather. There are porta-loos available, and water hydrants are accessible, but there are no shower facilities on the campsite – and please don’t use soap or detergent near or in the pond.
All adult guests are required to provide ID at check in for security. Some areas of the ranch are wheelchair accessible, and one of the outhouses is also wheelchair accessible.

Local attractions
It’s unlikely that you’ll ever drag yourself away from the farm, but if you do, there’s plenty of choice for adventures in the open air. You can try out kayaking, tubing and fishing on the Smith River – hire fishing gear at Smith River Outfitters (25 minutes) – or play football at the Smith River Sports Complex (15 minutes’ drive).
Stride out along the Mountain Laurel Trails (20 minutes), or go exploring in a 4WD at Catfish ATV Trails and Pond. If you’re traveling with kids, Fairy Stone State Park (both half an hour) offers a sandy beach and a family-friendly splash park, or you can hire a kayak to explore the peaceful landscapes around forest-fringed Philpott Lake (45 minutes).
For a change of pace (and scenery), discover dinosaur skeletons and fossils at the Virginia Museum of Natural History, or try your hand at drawing classes at Piedmont Arts in Martinsville (20 minutes), where there are also microbreweries, pizzerias and Mexican restaurants to keep your energy levels up.
