  • Primitive camping by the Buffalo River in Lewis County, Tennessee
  • A 20-minute drive to the Natchez Trace Parkway and Hohenwald
  • Dark-skies site with river frontage; stores 20 minutes’ drive
A quiet slice of the Appalachia foothills in secluded Lewis County, Tennessee, On the Buffalo is a wild 12-acre campsite with seasonally changing views of the Buffalo River. Both family- and dog-friendly, the camping area has a few tent pitches set in pasture amid wildflowers, in pine forest or on a hill above the river. The goal is to keep the campsite as quiet and safe as possible, so only one vehicle is allowed per tent – there’s designated parking near the campsite entrance. A single track leads from the bluff down to the river so you have complete freedom to explore along the river frontage, swim, fish or kayak. The campsite owners offer a shuttle service for anyone with their own gear to drop in spots of their choice. These tranquil surroundings make a wonderful overnight retreat if you are slowly exploring the historic Natchez Trace Parkway. The site is accessed from a well-maintained state highway and is close to the towns of Hohenwald (both 20 minutes’ drive) and Collinwood (half an hour), where you can stock up on essentials for grilling on the campfire, or tuck into steaks and burgers in the local restaurants. Please note that there are no bathroom facilities on site, so ask about the bucket toilet and pop-up shelter option. Bring torches for moving around after dark, and be sure to take advantage of this tranquil dark-skies site to do some star spotting.
