It's free, quick and easy!
- Quiet remote naturist campground with a mountain, stream and ponds
- A 15-minute drive from Shope Creek; 55 minutes to the Lake Lure area
- Fishing on-park; hiking at the bottom of the hill; fire rings allowed
High time for a holiday with fishing and forest hikes on the horizon? At Kinderhook Hollow, you’ll be high in the literal sense – this site is 3000 feet above Warren Wilson College in North Carolina. This group-friendly naturist place, while quite remote in atmosphere, is just 25 minutes’ drive away from downtown Asheville and 20 minutes from Black Mountain, with easy access to the road.
Nature runs strong here… there are three acres of pasture, three stocked ponds, a stream and a mountain. Plus, the site has planted and transplanted over 1000 trees of all shapes and sizes, some marked and others natural.
When you’re after a stick to poke the fire with, there are bamboo sticks already cut out (you’re not permitted to break any branches, cut fresh bamboo, snap saplings or disturb mushroom logs set up as tipis by the stream).
How about that downtime? Well, there’s catch and release fishing on site, or more fishing and hiking to get stuck into at the bottom of the hill. It’s a friendly place here – kids are welcome, as are pets, so you should feel quite chilled out.

Local attractions
The outdoors is your oyster… and it isn’t just for the adults. Whether you’re a big kid at heart or you’ve got your own, a plunge down the natural waterfall at Sliding Rock (an hour and five minutes’ drive) is a highlight of the Pisgah National Forest. And in the Chimney Rock (50 minutes) and Lake Lure (55 minutes) area, there’s a splendid river swimming spot for kids on the way to bouldering and rock climbing in the forest.
As for closer by, well, there are hikes in Shope Creek (15 minutes’ drive) or the Graveyard Fields (an hour and 10 minutes), a soak and picnic at the Swannanoa River (10 minutes) in Owen Park or the stream and swimming pool at Montreat College (25 minutes).
Then there are the towns too – perhaps fishing on the stream in Old Fort (half an hour), the curious shops in Black Mountain (20 minutes) or touring Asheville’s 8000-acre Biltmore (20 minutes) estate on horseback, mountain bike or kayak.
And for more nature, try out white water activities on the French Broad (50 minutes or 20 minutes for calmer waters) or soaking in the Hot Springs (an hour and five minutes).
