- Strict quiet time after 11pm; shops and restaurants in Crystal River
On the lookout for a peaceful camping spot on Florida’s Nature Coast? Your search may be over at Tangwood, five minutes’ drive from Crystal River in Citrus County. Whether you’re stopping for a night or staying longer to explore the area, this site is a simple, comfortable and handy base for west-coast Florida adventures – including swimming with wild manatees.
Accessible by a level and well-maintained track, the pitches sit under mature trees and enjoy plenty of privacy from other guests. Generators are permitted overnight, but to ensure everyone has a restful stay, quiet hours begin at 11pm, so please be considerate of your neighbours and keep noise to a minimum overnight. Parties and noisy gatherings are not allowed.
As well as the manatees, another of the biggest pulls of Tangwood is its proximity to downtown Crystal River. You can stock up in the local shops, eat out in the restaurants and know you’ve got somewhere chilled to return to at the end of the day.

Local attractions
If you’d like to meet some manatees, you’re certainly in the right spot. Crystal River (five minutes’ drive) is the only place in the US where you can get into the water with these gentle giants, and they collect at Kings Bay and Three Sisters Springs (both 10 minutes) in great numbers. You can book guided boat tours to swim and snorkel with them, or kayak up river to see them – just remember to respect their space and don’t get too close.
Crystal River also offers a host of other activities, from some of Florida’s best fishing to challenging golf courses. You can whizz along the Citrus County Cross-County Trail – which interconnects with the Withlacoochee State Trail – by bike, or take long hikes through native trees in Potts Preserve (40 minutes).
Into history? There’s a preserved pre-Columbian Native American ceremonial centre in Crystal River Archaeological State Park (10 minutes), where you can also see burial mounds and temple relics; learn more at the park’s Interpretive Museum.
