Local attractions
As well as all the outdoor fun to be had at the campsite, you can follow the Sunrise Trail directly from Robinson’s Cottages on foot, by bike or on horseback. There are way-marked trails through riverine ecosystems at Cobscook Shores (25 minutes’ drive), and kingfishers or eagles to spot amid the watery landscapes of Sipp Bay Preserve (15 minutes).
More wildlife adventures for summer visitors could include whale-watching boat trips from Eastport and Lubec, or cruises to see the puffin colonies on Machias Seal Island from Cutler Harbor (40 minutes). If you’d like to learn a little colonial history, head for the interpretive trail and ranger talks at Saint Croix Island International Historic Site (half an hour).
And of course, Maine is famed for its magnificent displays of autumn foliage; peak times for viewing the swathes of gold and burnt umber are the first two weeks of October, but a visit any time in September is pretty impressive too.
