  • Secluded campground with views of Iowa countryside near Guthrie Center
  • A 10-minute drive to Lake Panorama; Springbrook State Park 20 minutes
  • Peaceful sites on a farm with professional kitchen, hens, and horses
A secluded, farm-style gathering and retreat centre, Firefly Creek Ranch has grass and hardstanding pitches with glorious views of Iowa corn fields. This is a laidback and welcoming place for small groups of women and their families, with free-range chickens and ducks wandering the campsite, cheeky goats, and horses grazing peacefully in neighbouring paddocks. Facilities at this easygoing spot include showers and a toilet block, as well as a fully equipped commercial kitchen (an extra charge applies) for creating farm-to-table meals. You can bring your own food and cook up something really special in this kitchen, or spark up the barbecue back at your pitch – pick up basics in Guthrie Center (10 minutes’ drive) convenience stores, or give in to temptation and order a takeaway Mexican dish to eat back at base camp. There’s no pressure to do anything at all – so life just flows along. At night, you can get together with other guests and chat around the campfire, or retreat to the TV room to watch a film – it’s totally your decision. If you’re into getting active, local sports amenities include golf (five minutes’ drive), horse riding (20 minutes) and fishing for bass on the Middle Racoon river (10 minutes).

Local attractions

Up the cultural input with a wander around Guthrie County Historical Village (five minutes’ drive) for its heritage wooden buildings and vintage railway station, while at Coon Rapids Sculpture Park (30 minutes), you can combine art and the fresh air with walks and picnics among wacky contemporary sculptures. If you’d rather just concentrate on getting some clean Iowa air, Lenon Mill Park (10 minutes) has got you covered with scenic walks along the Middle Raccoon river, plus canoe and kayak rental and a chance to spot swans or geese. If you’re looking for a (slightly) more strenuous activity, follow the circular Raccoon Valley Bike Trail (10 minutes) on foot or two wheels along an old railroad line. Lake Panorama (10 minutes) is a mecca for golfers keen to reduce their handicaps, with two challenging courses, while Springbrook State Park (20 minutes) is an all-year-around destination with skiing in winter, plus rock climbing, mountain biking and rafting in summer.
