  • Peaceful and scenic site at 1200 metres in the Jura mountains
  • Next to the Le Chasseron hiking path; ski trails and kit hire close by
  • Kitchen facilities on site; well-known local restaurant next door
Up at an altitude of 1200 metres in Switzerland’s Jura-Nord Vaudois region, the views are fabulous, the air is clear and fresh and the general atmosphere is as peaceful as could be. And that's exactly the spot that Camping Les Cluds occupies, in a wooded pasture about five minutes' drive from the village of Bullet. It's a lovely place to base yourselves for a holiday full of outdoor activities – including hiking, cycling, swimming, horse riding and a variety of winter sports – or simply settling down to soak up the scenery and serenity. When you're out and about during the day you’re likely to pass by several Alpine chalets that are open in summer for meals, drinks and snacks – often accompanied by more of those fine views. You won’t need to go far for your evening meal, however, as the site is next door to the excellent Restaurant des Cluds, which has been serving up top-notch regional specialities since 1938. You're welcome to stop here for a drink on the terrace, choose good-value set menus or try full meals like fondue and filet mignon. Sprucing yourself up for a nice dinner after a long day of hiking should be simple enough, as the site has a launderette and drying room as well as toilets and showers. If you’d rather do your own meals, you'll be able to use the kitchen facilities on site and serve up your meals in the indoor common room. It’s also got a coffee machine for your early-morning caffeine fix and a billiards table for a little bit of competition of an evening.

Liked: The pitches were a good size and well kept. Quiet and lovely location. On arrival the welcome was great. Restaurant and cafe bar next door were a great addition.

Disliked: The car was not allowed on the pitch but parked quite close by and in a safe place. Trolleys were available to transport camping equipment and luggage which worked well. Price for electric and dog charged each night and for hot water either for a shower or to use a sink to have a wash was a bit steep.

Liked: A very peaceful campsite. Almost too peaceful and I constantly worried my children were too loud for it! It was lovely though. Very quiet (apart from something mentioned in the disliked section...). Very rural, high up in the mountains, yet close enough to lots of things to do. We were only there for 2 full days but we went down to Lake Neuchatel and the children swam in the lake. We went to a town down there and looked around some shops and got some lunch. We went swimming at a pool near to the campsite on both afternoons. It was the most stunningly located pool I've ever been to, situated on the side of the mountain. The children loved it, with its waterchute and diving boards and small cafe where they got ice creams. We also drove up the mountain behind the campsite and back down the other side to the tobogganing place. I'd like to go back for longer because there was so much to do that we just didn't have time for. We ate at the restaurant on the campsite one night but other than that and the lunch we had in the town by the lake, we prepared all our other meals in the kitchen on the campsite. I really appreciated this facility. The was a gas hob, microwave, kettle, coffee machine and fridge freezer and all cooking utensils and pans were provided. There was also a shelf of provisions if you needed anything and an honesty box. There were two large tables to eat at. The games area was also in the same room, with toys, games and books at the other end. The washing machine room was through a door at the end. Toilet and shower blocks were clean. There was a small play area near the camping area and a larger one next to the restaurant.

Disliked: We had to sit in the car to charge our phones. There's a machine near reception for charging phones but you had to pay. With mine and both children's phones it would have cost a fortune to charge them all every day we were there. They don't want you using the normal sockets anywhere to charge phones but the sockets were such a shape that UK>EU plug adapters didn't fit in them anyway. The only other thing I disliked isn't really the fault of the campsite... But one of the nights we were there, there was gun fire for several hours throughout the night. It was in the forest up the hill behind our tent and my children were terrified. I had to google (using the last 18% of battery life on my phone because I couldn't charge it properly!) to find out why. I don't know whether this is true but I told my children this anyway, just to put their minds at rest so that they might go back to sleep, but apparently Swiss men do target practice at random times because of the National Service. Why they have to do it all night next to a campsite though, I don't know. I put earplugs in and it muffled the sound enough for me to get back to sleep eventually but we were all very tired the next day. Oh and one other thing I've just remembered about... the pitch was very rocky (understandable up a mountain though) and I bent half my tent pegs trying to get them in. Some of them wouldn't go in at all. Fortunately it wasn't too windy so the tent didn't blow away.
