Caravanning around southern Spain? Whether your plans involve travelling from Catalonia to Andalusia, or staying put to make the most of the splendid landscape, consider staying at the Area de Autocaravanas Granja La Carmela, not far from the E15 road that leads into Murcia (25 minutes’ drive). Guests here can look forward to a warm welcome, a peaceful vibe and a top location that puts you within a 10-minute drive of the Embalse de Santomera. At this reservoir, you can explore hiking trails snaking through a pine forest or indulge in a spot of birdwatching: the lake’s reeds and rushes (and the nearby Ajauque and Rambla Salada Wetland Protected Area) are home to kingfishers and herons. Observant wildlife enthusiasts might also spot the occasional bird of prey or fox while on site. The gardens at Granja La Carmela are decorated with vibrant mosaic creations, painted stones portraying cute animals, and colourful flower baskets hanging from equally colourful bicycles. It all makes for a rather jolly ambience, and a top setting for a picnic (tables are scattered throughout). Speaking of picnics… A small on-site shop sells homemade and local goods – from jams and honey, to wine and limoncello. In the morning, you can purchase bread and pastries from a visiting baker; for anything else, there are plenty of stores in nearby Santomera (10 minutes). Dogs are welcome (but please keep them on a lead while on site); and amenities include showers, a launderette and a communal fridge freezer.

Local attractions

Spend a day in Murcia (25 minutes’ drive), staring in awe at the elaborately ornate façade of the cathedral, or checking out the displays at the archaeological museum and the Real Casino de Murcia (not a casino, but a cultural centre with exhibits). The many green areas along the banks of the river Segura are top spots for a shaded walk. The historic city of Cartagena (50 minutes) has a wealth of Roman-era sights, including the excavated remains of the Molinete Roman Forum Museum, two ancient amphitheatres and the defensive Punic Wall. The area’s naval heritage, underwater archaeology and military history all take centre stage at various museums around the city. Head to the coast and visit the Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar (50 minutes), an area of wetlands and salt ponds inhabited by flamingoes, avocets and chameleons. Then there’s the beaches, of course, such as sandy Playa de la Torre Derribada and Playa Llana.
