Candás

General

  • Quiet family-friendly site with direct access to the beach
  • Explore without a car: bus stop just outside
  • 15-minute walk to the pubs, restaurants and shops of Candás

'A lovely gem' is a mere sliver of the praise piled upon Camping Perlora by gratified former guests – who've lavished compliments galore on the views, the location, the ease of getting about and the highly friendly vibe on this smashing Asturias site.

This small and amiable place is on a Perán peninsula cove on Spain's beaut northern coast, between Palmera beach and Perán Bay. Spectacular sea views are all around: from the pitches, the restaurant terrace, the tennis court and even from the big windows of the TV room… To see the sea up close, less than a kilometre's potter will take you to Palmera and Carranques beaches, for lazy days and watersports.

Bus and rail links are close by for rambling about the northern Spanish coast by public transport, and it's a scenic 15-minute wander to the local town of Candás where the pubs, restaurants, cafés and supermarket will see you sorted for supplies. A cake shop is in town too – possibly for picking up the stickiest specimen you can get your mitts on and bearing it back to site for a scenic picnic overlooking these fab blue waters…

Camping Perlora is a small and well-kept site, with spotless amenities including toilets and showers, a washing-up area, a launderette and facilities for disabled guests. A food shop and gas cylinders are to hand for essentials and a supermarket is just outside the site; the freshly baked bread at this last comes highly recommended too.

Lovely location overlooking the sea. We found space at the top with amazing views. Easy to get to Oviedo and Aviles. Pleasant walk into town along the sea front. Plenty of shower blocks which were kept clean.

    Disliked:

Quite cramped. If you are down below there are a lot of caravans crammed in. Access quite tight when towing a van. Wifi supposed to work everywhere, but signal weak away from reception.

Lovely smallish site overlooking the bay if you choose to go ‘on the top’ as we did. We had a welcome from reception and good English spoken.
There is a bar on site, although we felt the Spanish holiday makers were a little non communicative. For some reason we seemed to be interesting to stare at!!
Great walk along the promenade to Cadas where there are two supermarkets and plenty of bars, restaurants etc. Also a really lovely walk around the area with some amazing views.
Caught the train to Gijón which is definitely worth a visit. Train and buses available to go the Gijón and Ovieado.
Unfortunately we didn’t have great weather but that shouldn’t spoil your overall feel of the site.
Showers and toilets good and laundry room.
Also a tennis court where we had a good knock around!

Very friendly staff. Only a 10 min walk along the front to Candas where there are bars and restaurants, etc, and a really nice sculpture trail. Turn left out of the campsite and there are a few bars and a small supermarket; walk under the viaduct and turn left to get to the station. Trains are quite frequent into Gijon (you have to walk over the train tracks to get to the platform for Gijon) where you can change from the yellow to the red line (not sure what it’s called) for a train to Oviedo, which is definitely worth a visit. You pay for your train ticket once to get to Gijon.
Buy your ticket to Oviedo at Gijon. Can’t comment about the restaurant /bar as it wasn’t open at this time of year.
Only gave it a 4 because of the limited toilet facilities currently. Plenty of hot water. And the view from the washing up sinks are fantastic.

    Disliked:

As other people have said it’s a bit cramped but we were there out of season so we had a choice of pitch, which was great, we had a fantastic view over the bay. Most European sites are cramped by U.K. standards we Brits seem to like more privacy!
They were updating the shower block when we were there so there will be more showers.

Local attractions

Take the scenic 10-minute meander along the promenade to reach the comely seaside town of Candás, a place of seafood and sardines, pubs and restaurants, cafés and shops. A potter around its port should be an early stop (remember there's a cake shop in town too...); after that, and if not too full of crumby goodness, watersports including diving, canoeing, swimming and waterskiing can all be accessed from here.

Hiking, cycling and mountain bike trails are plentiful in the area too, on the several coastal trails for hiking or the quiet rural roads and tracks inland for cycling and mountain biking.

Another most worthy option is to drive (or cycle, if hardy) the 13 kilometres to the spectacular Cabo de Peñas or Cape of Peñas, the most northern cape in the Principality of Asturias. Clamber the Gaviera rock for views in all directions, then take a trip to the famed Cabo Peñas lighthouse and its marine museum.

From the bus stop just outside the site, venture the 20 kilometres or so to the biggest city in the Asturias principality, Gijón, spectacularly set on the Bay of Biscay. Oviedo, the province capital, is 35 kilometres away.
