Stretching your legs is a cinch from this site, whatever your walking or biking style – site staff are full of useful info on hiking routes in the surrounding Sierra de Tuyo and the mountains beyond. For adventure sports, head to Sobrón, half an hour away, which is a hub for all sorts of activities including horse riding, kayaking and climbing. For something a bit gentler, take the 20-minute drive to Santa Catalina Botanical Garden, to see almost 1,000 plant species and wander in the ruins of a 13th-century monastery. It’s also worth heading over here after dark, as this is Spain’s first certified Starlight Park – come over of an evening for planetarium sessions and nocturnal guided tours. A little further away (but still less than an hour’s drive) are the city of Bilbao and the famed wineries of the Rioja region, several of which offer tours and tastings.
