A river, many mountains, spectacular views – and a fine beach a few seconds' stroll away: this is a properly pretty place. Beach basking, swimming and hiking are all a cinch to sort from Camping Maceira, near Covelo in the Galician province of Pontevedra and under an hour from the beaches of the Rias Baixas. It's on the banks of the Tea river, a scenic Galician spot for wild swimming among pools and waterfalls, and with hiking, mountain biking and cycling routes starting right from the site for truly determined travellers. (Not a truly determined traveller? Tis fine: hire an electric bike from the Camping Maceira team instead, to take out on the routes starting from the site grounds around these handsome green mountains.) Or you could, of course, just laze on the beach... This fine option is a most relaxed pick at the site, as it's a mere 20 metres away: one could even amble to it while still half asleep. Even closer, a pool, sauna and Jacuzzi are here to dip into for seriously serene times, part of a smart range of leisure facilities including pedal go-karts for hire, a DVD library, a multisports area, a games room, a playground and a marked circuit around the site for you to stroll or pedal. This friendly site welcomes all types of travellers, including those of the canine variety. There's a restaurant with terrace for long lazy evenings over dinner and drinks, and a food shop with local produce to sort the times in between.

Local attractions

This is a stunning spot for walks, hikes, bike rides and mountain biking, among the green mountains, high waterfalls and Tea river setting in Galicia's Pontevedra province: ask the amiable site team for their tips on the best routes. When you're in more of a sightseeing mood, it's a fab area too for ancient sights and famed old buildings, including those of Santiago, half an hour's drive away. Within about 10 kilometres is the preserved Sobroso Castle, an excellent option for dipping into Galician history near the site as each of its rooms has a different exhibition on local and castle themes. A low-key but finely scenic day can be had within 15 kilometres at the Roman bridge in Arbo, in a serenely pleasant place a few kilometres from Salvaterra do Minho. Over the bridge, you can hike about five kilometres to Moncao over the Portuguese border, and thus boast back home that you walked in two countries in one day...
