  • Peaceful site overlooking a sandy beach on Galicia’s Costa da Morte
  • Cabo Touriñán 25 minutes’ drive; A Coruña one hour and five minutes
  • Indoor pool; playground; restaurant and licensed shop; live music
It might be gloomily named, but Galicia’s Costa da Morte (Death Coast) sure has some cracking sandy beaches and fabulous sheltered coves fringed by luxuriant vegetation. If you’re thinking of spending your holiday in this spectacular corner of northwestern Spain, peaceful Camping Lago Mar might lure you with its enviable location – overlooking the coast and Praia do Lago beach, which can be accessed in 10 minutes on foot via a shaded road. This stretch of coast is just the spot for watersports – from open-water swimming, to surfing and sailing. And if the weather should take a turn, you can spend the day at the indoor on-site pool, maybe cradling a cool cerveza from the on-site bar in your hands… Other facilities include a tennis court, a playground and a restaurant serving regional meals – needless to say, the fish and seafood in this area are tip-top quality, and you can devour them on the terrace while taking in the sea views. The restaurant is also open for breakfast, with a selection of pastries and artisanal breads, cured meats and cheeses. If you’d rather do your own cooking, there’s an on-site store (which is also licensed), or you can shop in A Ponte do Porto or Muxía (10 minutes’ drive). Another highlight of Camping Lago Mar is its busy calendar of events, with live music concerts, DJ sessions and other cultural and artistic happenings. From a practical point of view, the site has a toilet block, showers and a washing-up area, as well as a launderette and drying room, plus charging facilities for electric cars.

Power optional grass campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Beautiful location, friendly staff. Understandably busy so little privacy on your pitch but lovely bar/restaurant area and the live music was fantastic. Time your trips when the tide is out to get to the main beach. A mile walk from the Camino into murcia- highly recommended.

Local attractions

Cabo Touriñán (25 minutes’ drive) is the westernmost point of mainland Spain. Take a stroll to the mirador at the northern end of this rocky headland for spectacular ocean views, then check out the Faro Touriñan lighthouse. If lighthouses are your thing, you might also want to visit the Museo do Faro de Cabo Vilán (half an hour), Spain’s oldest electric beacon (established in 1896). As well as artefacts illustrating its history, the building now houses art and photographic exhibitions. A stroll along this rugged coast might also result in encounters with guillemots and cormorants. Spend a day at A Coruña (one hour and five minutes) to see works by Goya (and a collection of delicate fans) in the Fine Arts Museum, the seals in the outdoor pools at Aquarium Finisterrae, and scientific displays in the glass cube housing the Museo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología.
