First-rate facilities, family-friendly, within day tripping distance of Barcelona, and a piffling 50 metres from a sandy beach… what a splendid Spanish site this is. (Also: watching the sun rise from the beach comes most highly recommended.)
Set steps away from the sandy beach of Sant Salvador and Coma Ruga, Vendrell Platja Camping and Bungalows is a big, friendly and scenic site dotted with palm trees and kept to highly maintained standards. Its top-notch leisure facilities include a big outdoor pool surrounded by a solarium, with plenty of sun loungers on which parents can bask and keep an eye on their offspring in the water (if your offspring is very little, there's a paddling pool on site too).
Also around are two playgrounds, wifi access throughout the site, and an internet point for those who can't be faffed bringing their laptops on hol. The site supermarket sells daily papers, fresh fruit, veg and meat for the barbie.
The Vendrell team arranges a wide variety of activities and events in high season, including aerobics, sports tournaments, workshops, teens and kids' clubs and happy hours. Inflatable pool parties run with a splash every Wednesday in July and August.
A laundry room is available on site.

Route directions
From Tarragona (N-240) take the motorway E-15/AP-7 and continue up to Exit 31. Follow direction to Comarruga and take the C-32 to the coast. The campsite is signposted.

Local attractions
As the Vendrell Platja Camping and Bungalows team rightly points out, bikes are the best way to delve into around the region without having to bother to hunt down car parking, so hire wheels from the site and get out into the surrounding countryside.
The closest villages – and many a shop, golden sandy beach and restaurant dishing up tasty local cuisine – are Calafell, Comarruga and Vendrell; Calafell is also a top spot for nightclubbing and its local market (every Tuesday.)
Barcelona is 60 kilometres away and the PortAventura theme park and Aqualeon waterpark and zoo are within a short drive: stop in at the Vendrell Platja Camping and Bungalows reception to book an organised tour directly for the former and park entrance passes for the latter to say pfffft to long queues.
