Family-friendly, within day tripping distance of Barcelona and a piffling 50 metres from a sandy beach… what a splendid Catalonia site Camping Estival Vendrell Platja is. (Also: watching the sunrise from the beach comes highly recommended.)
Set steps away from the sandy beach of Sant Salvador and Coma Ruga, this is a big, friendly and scenic site dotted with palm trees and kept to highly maintained standards.
Its leisure facilities include three outdoor pools (open during high season only), surrounded by a sunbathing area with plenty of sun loungers. For some grownups-only time, the first pool is for adults only. For the little kids, the site has provided a splash pool with water games. As for the bigger kids who are getting a bit braver, the third pool has a waterslide.
Also around are a playground and a supermarket selling fresh fruit, vegetables and meat for the barbecue. The team arranges a wide variety of activities and events in high season, including aerobics, sports tournaments, workshops, teens and kids' clubs and happy hours. A laundry room is available on site.

Local attractions
As the Camping Estival Vendrell Platja team rightly points out, bikes are the best way to delve into the region without having to bother to hunt down car parking, so hire wheels from the site and get out into the surrounding countryside.
The closest villages and towns have lots of shops, golden sandy beaches and restaurants dishing up tasty local cuisine – these include Calafell (within walking distance), Comarruga (35 minutes' walk) and El Vendrell (10 minutes). Calafell is also a top spot for nightclubbing and visiting the local market (every Tuesday.)
Barcelona is an hour's drive away and the PortAventura theme park and Aqualeon waterpark and zoo are within a short drive: stop in at the Camping Estival Vendrell Platja reception to book an organised tour directly for the former and park entrance passes for the latter to say bye to long queues.
